can anyone help me reconfigure my broadband on a new computer

ok, my new computer will arrive in a few days. my current one is windows 95, has a network card (Netgear FA311) which is connected to a motorola cable modem. The new computer will be windows XP. i will be using the same network card (no problems installing it), but i'm not sure how to set it up to use the broadband in windows. i know that winXP will install a driver automaticly, but is thereanything else i need to do. oh, and the cable company have given me a cd. the manual says it installs software and will then ask for my username, password etc etc. So, am i right in thinking i should





1.move the network card and let windows see it
2.connect the modem
3.install the software from the cd and input my password/username
4.done


i'm sure i'm missed something, like might i need to so in DM and play around with the network card. or do i need to run the network wizard for XP?

so i follow the guide (xphome) to set up the network card, install the stuff from the cd, and go?

one thing i noticed: when setting up my IP, do i need to use the same one that i have now?

wait, i just looked at my ISPs website (blueyonder), they say they don't mind sharing the connection, so i'm sure IPs aren't a problem, as long as i use the same NIC, right?

if you intend on sharing the connection (i think that is what you mean) you have to be way more specific so that we can help you out. 🙂
 
nah i'm not gonna share the connection for now, i just meant that, as they don't condem more then one computer on the connection, they woudn't mind what IP i have, because the computers would have diff IPs, right?

the router would take your wan ip ie: 24.x.x.x and would assign the computers in your lan a private ip such as 192.168.x.x the only way the 2 computers would have 2 different wan ip's is if you pay for 2 different accounts through your isp. so to answer your question if you share your connection ip's should be no problem. hope i didn't confuse you.
 
i emailed my ISP about how to set it up on the new computer and got this responce:

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your email to the blueyonder technical support team.

This will be a simple matter of installing your network card drivers, rebooting,
checking you have a valid IP address (either a 62.x.x.x or a 80.x.x.x address)
then configuring Internet Explorer.

i) Initially install your network card drivers.

ii) Once installed, go to:
For Win95/98/ME Start > Run > type 'winipcfg' > select NIC card from dropdown
box For WinNT/2000/XP Start > Run > type 'cmd' > type ipconfig/all)

iii) Once you are happy that you have a valid IP address, go to Control Panel >
Internet Options > Connections > Setup > Configure to set up through a LAN.

Once you have got through the IE configuration, you should be able to get web
pages.

this confuses me because there was no mention of the add new hard ware wizard, or using the cd they had given me when i had cable first installed

is it really as simple as the above instructions?
 
so if u were setting up u're connection to a new computer/ hard drive, that' what u'd do


ahh well i'll give it a go, and if i have trouble i'll call them like they said,........
 
The only thing my broadband provider see's is the name of the computer. More than likely, you shouldn't have to mess with IP's at all. A user name is the same thing as a computer name and the password is just for setting up email names and connecting to the server, etc.
