My 60Gb Maxtor is showing signs of breaking down on me. (Clicks violently while reading certain parts of the disk, then continues as normal...).

Anyway, ive got P4PE which has the new SATA connections. Are there actually any disks on the market that support this yet? Ive checked a few places but havent found anything.

Can these disks be used in conjuction with standard UDMA100 drives on the normal IDE connections?

Are there any disadvantages to these disks?

I know absolutely nothing about this and some help on the subject would be hugely appritiated!

ST380023AS Barracuda Serial ATA V 80 GB Serial ATA 7200 rpm 9 ms avg 1-inch
ST3120023AS Barracuda Serial ATA V 120 GB Serial ATA 7200 rpm 9 ms avg 1-inch

Price Watch lists a couple of places with Serial ATA drives for sale. Click on hard drives, type in "serial ATA" for a listing of places that currently carry them.

You can use a Serial ATA drive on a normal IDE connection IF you get a Serial to IDE adapter, but then your going backwards in speed from 150mbps to 100mbps.

You will also need a power supply with Serial ATA power connectors. Although I think, but I'm not positive, that manufacturers were going to ship these power adapters with every drive until they become standard on power supplies.

Thanks for the info.

I have the SATA plugs on the board, what i meant by using them in conjunction with IDE drives is could i have a normal IDE running aswell as a SATA drive, or does the one cancell the other out? If you see what i mean.

You can use both. It's just like mixing SCSI and IDE in one system or mixing ATA33 with ATA100 drives. No problemo.
