Can anyone get reservations at Nobu in New York? If not, can you recommended a great Japanese restaurant in the city?

Yea it's not that fancy of a place - nor is the food that great IMO. It's more of a tourist's restaurant. You can just walk in if you'd like. I like En better for the environment, service level and food.

Have you tried Tipo Maidik?

I have never understood the draw of overpriced, overrated restaurants and nightclubs. Ooooooh! Let's wait two weeks just to TALK to the guy who works the door and answers the phone so maybe we can pay him $500 to put us on the waiting list for next month!

For probably 1/2 the money you could get a meal that's twice as good in a similar place with similarly nice atmosphere.

Some of the best Chinese food I've ever had was at a dump in Chinatown called "Good Dumpling House." The portions were HUGE (and I can eat) and the service superior. They cooked whatever we wanted, however we wanted. 4 people ate for about 3 hours straight and the bill was about $230 IIRC. Everyone left with a big "to-go" bag full of great food. No atmosphere whatsover...unless you consider middle aged Asian men arguing over horse races "atmosphere" but man, that food...and the aura of Chinatown.

But then again, it's your money.

Next Door Nobu doesn't take reservations... just wait in line for a bit and you're in.

I'd recommend Mortimoto's as well, but you won't get reservations there either.
