Can anyone figure out this Photoshop tutorial?

I do have some experience... but not too much.

I get confused with the tutorial because it doesn't seem written as clearly as others I've seen.

A quick attempt, just following the steps without any particular attention to detail. What are you confused about?

4.draw 3 shapes like this on the feather with pentool

do I close the paths? if not how do I create the second and third paths for the little tears in the feather?

5. convert pathwork from step 4 into selections, on the feather's layer, tab Back Space (or Delete)

I don't know how to do this. I've searched on google and wasn't able to find anything to help me (maybe I did something wrong).

On step 4, yes, you close the paths. 🙂 You should have three individual wedge-shaped paths. You're just going to use them to delete wedges from the white feather layer. They can extend out beyond the edge of the feather if you want, since you're only concerned about deleting the white area.

For step 5, convert the path to a selection the same way you did for making the feather shape. You can do this by clicking the "load path as a selection" button at the bottom of the Paths palette.

For the other part of 5, I don't know what Tab + Backspace does, but you can just hit delete to erase what's inside the selection. Basically, you make the paths, turn them into selections, then select the white feather layer and hit delete. You'll come up with three empty wedges like in the tutorial.

I hope that made it clearer. Good luck.
