ANYTHING you would change about this (i want to order tonight or tomorrow) Lenovo T400 i customized:

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26GHz 1066MHz 3MBL2) 25W1
Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic12
14.1 WXGA+ TFT, w/ LED Backlight
ATI Mobility Radeon 3470 with 256MB
1 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM)8
UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad)
80 GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm4
CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo 24X/24X/24X/8X Max, Ultrabay Slim (Serial ATA)5
No Bluetooth
Intel WiFi Link 5300 (AGN)10
Integrated Mobile Broadband upgradable
6 cell Li-Ion Battery60
2764: 1 Year Depot Warranty - TopSeller7

Questions: should i get a 9 cell battery? its 70 bucks more. Should i do the wimax card? Switchable graphics would let me have the quiet of integrated with the power of discreet (albeit weak discreet) graphics, right? Any downsides? I can DEFINITELY upgrade the Windows 7 and i can DEFINITELY upgrade the RAM and HDD, right? Any noise concerns i should be worried about with this?

I opted with lenovo instead of dell, i hear they are good computers. I heard this is a quiet model too.

how is lenovo customer support? what would i do if anything was wrong with it?

Frist we need to know what your exspectations are of the system. What will you be using this for?

Weather the card is removable or built into the laptop's main board isn't going to effect performance. You'll have the same performance no matter if the 3470 is on the board or on a seperate card when it comes to laptops. Wimax isn't needed unless you are in an area with an established and reliable wimax infrustructure in place.

RAM and HDD can be upgraded later but you would be smare to have no less then 2gb of RAM from the start. Reguardless of what you'll use the unit for.

no wimax here...want to be able to do word processing, some dvd burning, an occasional movie, internet, maybe really light gaming...thats it. i know i can get something less that would be good for me, but i like good things.

i asked because the card is switchable...so it would affect performance if i switched between the two, right?

With the 2 graphics cards then you either have the integrated that will net you better battery life, or the discrete which will let you have well... better graphics.

But that post is talking about 7200RPM drives. The one you're configuring has a 5400RPM drive. Did the one you return have a 7200RPM drive or a 5400RPM one?

edit: wait, are you sure the person that made that thread isn't confusing CPU whine with HDD noise? Some of the mobile C2Ds make a whining noise on certain power management settings. That's completely unrelated to the HDD.

That's inherent to the CPU, not the build quality of the laptop. You can avoid it depending on how you configure your power management, if it really annoys you.
