Can an ISP prevent you from visiting a website?

If I try to visit this particular site I just get the message that the page cant be found but my friends can access it fine. I have more than one computer in my house and it cant be accessed from them either. Is it possible that my ISP is blocking my access? Is this legal?

Your ISP can block you from whatever websites they want. Chances are you are a noob and its just a temporary DNS problem though.

Actually I did refresh the DNS Cache...

It doesnt work on any of my computers

Probabably blocked by your parents at the router...

Router's in my room, I control it, my parent have no clue

I have a friend who runs a Dialup/WISP. He blocks goatse and tubgirl. Nobody's complained yet.

Have you tried pulling DNS off someone else's server (not your ISP's). Can you ping or tracert the site's IP?

My friend had a similar problem: his computer could not access Google (yes, Google, for god's sakes) -- it would result in a 404, while any other computer obviously could. He had that problem for several months with no progress. It did not bother him enough to dig deep down into packet sniffing or reinstalling Windows, so he just left it. I don't know how the story ended, but I think he can access it now.

I can ping the site's dns server ips, but not the url

Also, how would I pull DNS off someone else's server?

You can have problem if your ISP dont update DNS frequently

You could always try flushing your DNS cache instead of just refreshing it, that might help.

But can you ping the webhost by IP rather than by URL? That would be one way of telling you if it's an IP filtering issue or a DNS issue. Alternatly, you could check your ISP's DNS servers with dig.

If you want to pull dns off of someone else's servers, you just put the IPs of the servers of interest on your list of nameservers. The authoritative servers for most domains should work, if you don't have any others in mind. That should be easy to do under any OS, though where you make the changes is different depending on which one you're running.

In worst case, if you can find a convenient anonymous proxy, you could always try bouncing off of that. I don't know how common those are these days, however, but I haven't looked.

Been unavailable for a couple of months now

Nothing in the hosts file, its on multiple computers, not just mine, all 4 computers in my house

One night while i was home on break, the internet went out and i called them up to see what was going on. The lady on the line said she had just paged their tech at home, and he would be over momentarily.

I asked 'Tech? As in one person?" Her answer of 'Yes' floored me.

When the internet was finally restored 3 days later, we went right onto bellsouth's website and signed up for DSL and then on to DirecTV for satellite

Yes, they probably are blocking that site... and I think you know why. Reguardless... they are allowed, because it is Their service. If you don't like it, you can leave. But that does suck... sorry man.

Yep, theyre only in Weston and Coral Springs. I have had very few issues and when I have called up they fixed it right away, like when there was a signal quality issue, they came out the next day after I called the night before. Its faster than Bellsouth DSL and I know plenty of people that have had issues with it. We have satellite tv also

Have you checked to see if it's in your browser's list of forbidden zones? Also, if you have Spywareblaster and/or Spybot S&D installed, it might be blocked.
