The DS3L has one IDE channel, you can attach any two of IDE hard drives or optical drives.

Actually, the DS3L has 5 IDE drive ports, 1 PATA and 4 SATA. Your old HDD can be one of two PATA devices.

Both PATA and SATA are IDE - which simply means the drive electronics are integrated on the device.
