A friend's Linksys WRT54GS randomly disconnects itself, once it happens, whole network not working. So, can he hook up like, "Cable modem - 8 port switch - Wireless Router", instead of "Cable modem - Wireless Router - 8 port switch " ?

Any wireless connections would still go through the router and obtain a IP address from the router.

What would change is the status of any PC's connected to the 8-port switch. Switches don't provide IP addresses only a connection between multiple PC's/ It is likely that the Cable company only provides 1 IP address to your friend so after the first connection, likely the router, none of the other hard wired PC's would recieve a IP address or one in the 169 default range.

Do a search on Open Source firmware upgrades for the WRT54GS router.

If it's already flakey, then it might be worth loading another firmware (in addition to trying cooling, reducing the torrent loads, checking the power supply perhaps). Note that DD-WRT has a scheduled re-boot feature in it as well to help clear up any cumulative issues.

Especially with the more recent crippled versions of such routers, it's important to follow the installation steps in detail, and to use the correct versions of the firmware for the device.

Edit: Apparently not an uncommon problem, and sometimes RMA worthy:
