Can a trip be written off on your taxes if you donate money/items to poor/less-fortunate in the country you are visiting

Can this be done legally?

I have heard that there is an accountant in my town that takes annual trips to China, Africa, and Central America. Supposedly she writes these trips off by donating books, pencils, papers, and related items to schools in those countries.

Is this legal?

I won't ask her because she probably won't admit it if she did.

Maybe she is donating through an organization based here in the US.

That could be. She is a member of Rotary International.

if she claims its a business trip she can write off the transportation and meals\lodging on all days "she worked"

Basically you can write off whatever you want, just pray you have proof when the irs comes knockin on your door.

I doubt she claims it is business. Probably charitable donation trip...if there is even such a thing.
