Can a software program damage a hardware?

I am about to install a game server that can handle more than hundreds of computers and this require a high memory card, and video card. I have observed from other computer that this game server I have will sometimes make the computer to freeze or hang, and it needs to be restarted. This server I am saying operates like a virus because every single second, it will log and save the events. So my question is: Is this harmful?

I only have Dual Core 2.7 Ghz processor, 2GB memory card, 1GB Video Card I don't know about the memory bits of my video card, maybe 128mb or 256mb.
