Can a short in a LED fan cause the power to fail?

Hi Guys,

I have a post in General Hardware about my computer shutting off once in a while on its own. Just recently it shut itself off again, and I noticed that one fan that the LED's weren't working before suddenly started working.

Can a short in say a 12 V fan/12 V LED cause the power supply to trip and not supply 12 V but still supply 5 and 3.3 to the motherboard?

I now have an Antec True430 after replacing a generic 400 W because of this problem. It still happens.

Try running the system without the fan. If of it goes away, there you have it. If its still there, most likely a heat or power issue. Ape Out.

Of course I have disconnected the fan. I am actively troubleshooting the problem. Anyone know the answer to this question above?

I believe a motherboard would still require the 12v but I could be wrong. What else is in your system for equipment?

If I understand correctly, you had an open circuit not a short on that fan. It is unlikely that an led circuit opening would cause kick with a negative effect on the psu. It has also been my experience that when a psu drops out it does not drop single rails, but shuts down completely.

Thanks guys.

@ jackschmittusa: I read that in the manual about when it shorts it goes out completely so you are probably right on that, just wanted to see if anyone could say otherwise.

@ amdskip: Follow my sig to see what equipment I have, and add an ATI TV Wonder.

This problem has got me baffled. Maybe it's the motherboard failing. Like I said before, I have to hold the power button for 4 seconds to shut it down after it shuts off in order to get the lights on the mouse, keyboard, and computer power light to shut off. Then the computer will fire right up when the power is pressed.

I just don't understand how this problem started after getting a clear acrylic case and 5 LED fans. Plus it has only shut itself down 2 times in the past 8 days or so. All temps are great, 100 CPU and 82 MoBo.

Anyone know if the motherboard controls output power (12,5,3.3) separately, or does it just tell the PSU to turn all power on? I'm asking because maybe the motherboard stops supplying the signal to keep the 12 V on.

I just had a similar problem. This thread helped me fix it (maybe just temporarily though). thanks guys.
My computer was also randomly shutting off for the past few days. When this would happen i just turned it back on again. When i got home from work today, the power was off and when i tried to turn it back on, only the power supply seemed to be getting power. So i unhooked the the psu fan and cpu fan and turned on the power, and everything worked fine. I just pluged the fans back in and started the system up again. everything seems ok now.
No idea what the problem was though. first time it ever happened to me.
