Can a public school legally ask for home utility bills?

I'm a magnet student @ my highschool (even though I live a LOT closer to the school than most of my non-magnet friends) and because being in a magnet means being in an elective class each year pertaining to the "magnet department" I'm in. Physics AP is two periods and taking it next year will mean I have to drop my math class, which I don't want to do.

The only way to not give up a math class is to move in with someone else (change addresses). To change addresses, they require you to show a power or water bill. Can a public school legally do this?

Why not, they teach kids how to put condoms on cucumbers.

I don't know what this has to do with anything, but what's the problem with showing them a bill as proof of address?

I think he wants to know if it's ok if he tells the school he moved, even if he didn't.

reading between the lines..

edit- didn't type fast enough, no longer necessary to read between lines.

They are using that bill As a proof of address so that you aren't living somewhere else form where you say you are.

If they only get funding from one area then yes I would say they can

Just show 'em your water bill, rather than your phone bill with all the 1-900 calls to the psychic hotline and pr0n chatlines ;)

A school that has students from outside their local area, usually because they offer some advanced classes or something.

If you feel comfortable with it, why not? My mom moved in with her grandmother when she went to one of those schools.

No, look.

We are NOT moving. I'll have to use a friends address to get out of magnet and provide a utility bill from HIS house.. See the problem?

Wouldn't your name have to be on the utility bill for that to work? As a minor your address would be with your legal guardians I would think, so how could just showing them a bill for another address prove anything? I'm so confused!!!!

I still don't get this. Magnet schools are supposed to be optional, are they not? If so, why is it you need to move to get out?

And hope you don't get caught -- being suspended for lying / fraud will look good on your college applications.

Why not just deal with it and take the physics now? If you enjoy math more, you'll get more out of the class taking it in college anyway.

I mean comfortable as in not being totally legit. I know most people are willing to suspend their morals these days but you never know, there are a few out there that insist on being totally honest for some reason.

Yes, they can ask you to verify that you live in a township in order to be permitted to go to school there. I don't know how it works in CA, but in NJ it's illegal to to say you are living in a different place in order to be allowed to go to another school.

Same here in NYC. Especially with the school zones. Trying to lie about living in a zone with a better school just to get in.

basically -

you're going to have to get YOUR parents name on the bill. that's why using a friends house doesn't work. their parents may be a tad queasy about it. when i did it, i used a relative's address and just changed one of their bills. as long as they get paid, they don't care who's name is on the bill.

you could also apply for an inter or intra district transfer, depending on your situation. but if the schools are full, you won't be approved unless the administration loves you and can push it through.

EDIT: as for if they can ask for your bills. YES they can. they MUST prove you live in the attendance boundary or you will be told to enroll at your home school.

I know quite a few people who did this. They just pretended to live elsewhere, all their school mail was sent to a relative's house. If you know a relative in the area, you could ask them if they'd mind playing along with your plan.

Yeah, all my relatives live in Ohio, with an exception of one who lives in Utah and another who lives in Texas.

3 ways ou of this that i see.

1)actually move in to the area
2)Rent the cheapest apartment possibel and just keep that.
3)Findsomeone that will be willing to let u change water or electric bill to your parents name
