Yes, but I believe you need a breakout cable that isn't standard with the system.

Can I get a confirmation on this?

Also, will component video cables improve image quality dramatically, or is it a waste of time? I plan on playing on a 24" flatscreen Wega.

Yep, but not just any set of component cables. It has to be made for the PS2. Sony makes them, as do a few other companies. I have the monster cable version.

Some come with the audio composite cables, some come with no audio which means you need to use the optical cable mentioned above. The optical cable would be connected to your home theater receiver.

I have my PS2 hooked up via a $7.00 Ebay component cable to the 30" Philips HDTV in my bedroom.. The picture is terrific. Waiting for a DVI cable so I can hook my other PS2 up in the living room (out of component inputs out there.)

I just got them yesterday, the picture looked jagged on my 65" Toshiba. Huge difference.

i got mine at the bestbuy where i work, but they stop carrying them. Go to a gamestop and you will see them. They are the Mad Catz ones that are universal meaning they have the propriertary connectors for xbox and PS2. Very cool that it is univeral, plus its only 10-15 bucks!

I just wanted to bump this thread to say that I bought the Mad Catz component cables for the PS2/Xbox and hooked it up to my PS2 and WOW, even on my little 20 inch flat screen tv the difference is like night and day. Definitely worth the cash.

yep, that whole separating the black/white from color and sending it over separate coax cables works wonders.

that's s-video.

and component. luminance is on one cable, red/green difference on one and blue/green difference on the other. Also known as Y/Pb/Pr or component video.

S-video uses twisted, not coax.

neener.

I have my PS2 hooked up to my 27 inch toshiba TV via component cables and DVD movies look like HDTV with the component hookup. Pretty fantastic picture. Looks better than watching DVD movies on my computer monitor.

Compared to composite, it looks a million times better. Compared to S-video, not a huge amount.

I would think that there would be little direct discernable difference between Component and S-Video, given equivalent-quality/gauge/impedance cables. The only difference is how the signals are derived, right? Either one is a *huge* step up from composite though. I have S-Video cables for nearly all of my console systems, SNES, Jaguar, 3DO, Saturn, etc. (Yeah, kinda old-school, I know.)

component you see it mainly in color depth and just a little in the blacks.

colors are more rich, edges can be a little more defined, black has a little more detail.

Its not the "OMG!!!" difference you get going from composite to s-video. But its there. It also depends on the TV and how it handles component video.
