Can a mainboard cause hard drives to malfunction?

I built myself a new computer a couple of months ago. The hardware are Athlon 64 3000+ ,
MSI K8T NEO-FIS2R, Powercolor Radeon 9800 pro, 512 MB PC 3200 and two hard drives, oneMaxtor Diamondmax plus9 80 GB one Western Digital Caviar 160 GB. I use Windows 2000 pro.
I was using Western digital as primary hard drive. After about 3 weeks the computer crashed and I understood that it was the hard drive (it was making strange noises and wasn´t able to access it in any way). I returned it and got a new one. In the mean time I used my other 80 Gb SATA as primary and it worked fine. When I installed the new one that was sent to me the the system crashed again after two weeks (yesterday) and it is now the 80 Gb SATA drive wich seems to be faulty. I also had an "emergency drive on 2 Gb wich I tried to install win2k on but I get cluster faults and error messages. The error messages are:
Could not activate installation program for .net
Could not activate installation program for net client
Could not activate installation program for net service
Could not activate installation program for net Trans
Could not activate installation program for infrared
After I get to adjust time and date the comp abruptly reboots and its the same routine again.

I wonder if my mainboard is malfunctioning and somehow fries my hard drives? is it viruses? (I have scanned for viruses with no results).
I find it hard to believe that I am just unlucky with hard drives 🙂

Any suggestions someone??

Yes a motherboard can cause your hard drives to fail but it is not normal. I find it funny that both your hard drives have failed. If I where you I wouldnt install any new H.D.D.s to the mainboard.
But before you place the blame on your mainboard check your PSU (power supply).
What kind of PSU do you have?
where did you buy your PC parts from.

How many hitpoints do a comp have?

Thanks for the reply.
I have a 400 W PSU the parts are bought from two internet stores in Sweden The PSU is a part of a chassi called Aspire X-sonic.
How can I see if there is a problem with the motherboard? or with the PSU?
