Can a legitimate copy of Office be installed on more than one PC?

It depends on the license. I believe that the regular retail copies of Office can be installed on one desktop and one laptop (although I have no idea what they would do to prevent you from putting it on another desktop).

Legally I don't think you're supposed to (unless it's a corporate/enterprise key, if this even exists, I don't know), but I don't think there is anything in the software that prevents it. At least for 2003 -- Office 2007 may have something that prevents this.

edit: Interesting, you might want to delve into the EULA, sounds like you can do a few installs legally.

I believe Home & Student allows for 3 concurrent installs, but the higher Office's do not.

That was my recollection as well, but I couldn't find anything about it in the product description on Newegg.

Just use Open Office. It's almost as good as Office 2003 and better than Office 2007. 😉

I am pretty sure the license allows installing on >1 PC as long as they are all yours. Read the EULA to make sure.

Read the EULA.

Last I remember you could install Office on a desktop and "portable" computer as long as you're the exclusive user on each and only one copy is in use at a time.

Back during the Office XP days, a MS rep. told me that this is true, don't know if it has changed w/ subsequent versions.

Office 2007 professional allows two machines. The idea is for a desktop and a laptop. It will activate fine on two machines, no issues.

+1 for two machines on Office Pro 2007.

it says one main machine and one "portable" in the EULA but since I can move my second PC around it sounds "portable" to me.

I have the Enterprise 2007 (Home Use Program), I bought through work. It says on the back of the case "You may use one copy of this software on one device within your home."
Though it might be just a employer restriction on the type of licenses they let you buy can't really complain much for $20 though 🙂

This, I'm almost certain the EULA states you can install on a primary pc and a portable pc

You could also go the Citrix route on a single core machine. Why single core? Because there will never be more then 1 user using it at a time. Time slicing FTW.

Doubt that would hold in court though. 😛

The license I got through school for office 2007 allows for one installation on desktop and one on laptop. (though I would think it is just technically two machines)

If you have any problems, just install the new OpenOffice. It is MS Office compatible and free!

I have my own version of Office 2007 now, but in the past I seem to remember being able to install the same 2003 program onto two or more computers. It was just that the extra accounts weren't registered online, so there were only 30 or so uses of the program until you'd have to register it.

The EULA is the determining factor, so check your particular version's EULA if you wish to know for sure 🙂

I have the same thing, but EULA still states that it can be installed on one desktop and one portable device.

I was able to activate both.

You must be a gov't worker, I have the same program and restrictions. I work for the Dept of Defense.

You are allowed to have it on a desktop and portable device, this works for *all* *retail* versions.

H&S can be on 3 of any type device.
