Can a hard drive be mounted in the space inside a case made for a floppy drive?

I'm scoping out a case I want to buy, but I have 2 hard drives, and the case has only 1 internal 3.5" bay. Can the hard drive be mounted on the space for a floppy?

It's an awkward situation... but I need to store this computer in a very small place, so I need a microATX case and mobo (its like 14inchesx14inches hxd)

I would worry about heat. Hard drive bays are usually behind a grill so there's some air moving past them. Just make sure there's going to be some air moving past the drive to help keep it cool.

I have one of these that I use to back things up from my desktop and my laptop. I've had for almost two years and I haven't had any problems with it.

I have one or 2 drives in my 2 floppy spaces (can't remember how many drives), but they fit fine, never had issues with them in the 6mo they've been there.

Kinda OT, but does anyone know if you can buy beige covers for floppy drive spaces? I removed my floopy drive a long time ago but still have that open space :p

If that doesn't work out a 5.25" will do with appropriate adapters or mobile racky type thingy.

Go to a Mom & Pops store and you can have one for a few cents if not free. I've got some but I'm in Japan so it will take awhile before it can reach you.

Hi, The only difference in a Floppy bay and a HD bay is that the HD bay is "Blind", that is, it does not have a hole the the front cover. Jim

Edit: I have mounted extra drives without a bay using thin metal straps screwed using the bottom drives mounting screws with holes at the bottom for the new drives mounting screws. Usually lots of room in the case for that.

If you don't have any bays available you can always mount a slimline laptop drive to a flat surface in the case using standoffs.

I think they make kits for using a 5.5 inch drive bay with a special adapter so it can hold both a hard drive and a slim laptop drive. Might look on a Mini-ITX site.

Yeah. I have an old computer case which doesn't actually have a spot for a HDD, just spots for two floppy's, and it has a HDD mounted in the spare floppy spot. That's from back in the days when HDD's were 5.25".

Yes you can put them in a floppy bay but the screw holes might not line up and then there's the heat problem - HDs in tight spaces tend to get too warm (assuming you'll have a floppy drive above or below it. I'm sending you a PM with something that may serve better.

Doesn't always fit. Sometimes the HDDs are too thick to fit inside one (such was the problem with mine)
