Can a gateway/router be used just as a hub?

Ok, I'm still hazy about their definitions, though I'm assuming the gateway is just one machine and the router is a mapper.

Can a router be used just like a hub?
I'm thinking about getting the Orinoco kit deal, but the cable modem my roommate and I use for DSL also has a built-in router.

Right now I have a SMC WAP (AP Only), so I'm wondering if I can set up the RG-1100 as an AP only as well.

I'm thinking it's similar to having a router/gateway act as a normal hub.

yeah... A router is a HUB with extra functions that are necessary for other things... but plug the PC's into it and it should connect them all to each other. You wont have to purchase a separate Workgroup hub to the UPLINK port (optional). So you should be OK.

Cable/DSL Routers, are combo units. They include Internet interface,
i.e. a WAN connection with routing capacity, and a firewall.

The other part of a "classical" combo is a DHCP (automatic IP assignment), and 4 port switch (Switch is a smart Hub).

The 4 port switch can be used by it self regardless of Internet connection.

The same applies to Wireless Cable/DSL Router. It can be used an Access Point with out any relation to the Internet.
