Can a credit card statement be used as a "utility bill"?

So my parents informed me that I got a letter for jury duty in my home town, however I am in school some 350 miles away year round, including summer school, so I won't be able to make it.

There are two check boxes here that fit my situation..one is a request for disqualification, whereby one of the reasons to be disqualified is because "I am not a resident of the court's jurisdiction", in which I can provide a utility bill for proof. However all utility bills go in my roommate's name. The only thing that really gets mailed to me down in LA that might be close enough is my credit card statement.

I really can't request a postponement either since I won't be at home for any extended period of time following the 6 months of the date of my summons..so what can I do?

How about a copy of a student reg card? It is possible to send a letter stating that you are not a resident because of school along with a class schedule or something else "official".
Include a copy of the CC bill, but black out the account number. Identity theft comes from being lax about such things.

being a student is the best way to get off jury duty. other than pregnancy.

i've been told not all counties let you get away with it, that'd you still have to show up at least one day.

santa clara county let me just check the "i am a full time college student at _________" and then mail it in.

depends where you are? In NY, being a student no longer gets you exempt from jury duty since 1995

Ah, I'm in Nor Cal..Alameda County to be exact. The only thing a student allows me to do is postpone it for up to 6 months..

credit card statement is not an utility bill, nor is a cell phone bill. get a name change from your roommate is the way to go.

Wrong. Being a lawyer is the best way to get off jury duty 🙂

Really? WTF? So if a NY resident is attending school in California ... or hell, Australia, they are expected to fly back for jury duty? Does the government pay the travel expenses?

Anyway, I got called for jury duty in PA when I was at school in VA. Played the student card and got off. Got called again for PA when I was stationed in CA with the Air Force ... played the military card and got off. Don't get me wrong ... serving on a juryt is a civic duty, and I would gladly serve if I didn't have to travel hundreds of miles to do it.

So now I've lived (and voted, etc.) in CO for 6 years and haven't gotten called. From what I've heard engineers rarely get picked anyway ... neither side wants a a juror whom they have to make a rational argument to 😛

I had a helluva time getting dismissed from jury duty. I wouldn't mind serving during the summer, but it's a major PITA to be on a 2 week trial and away from the classes I teach for 2 weeks. (as if they're going to find a substitute capable of teaching calculus and physics, even with lesson plans given to them)

I showed up, my name was selected, they questioned me... later, a friends mom who was in attendance mentioned "he sure talks a lot..." - Sure! I didn't want them to overlook anything that would disqualify me 🙂

Actually the BEST way is to start blabbing about jury nullification (Google it). It takes time to become a lawyer, and only 5 minutes to know enough about jury nullification to scare them off 😀
