Can a CPU Fry a motherboard

I had a core 2 duo, and asrock 775dual-vsta. I modded the northbridge voltage, and possible the fsb term voltage *not sure on that one. Anyhow one night when i was hammered i accidentally turned the knob on the Variable resistor. The mosfets next to the northbridge got torched.

So figuring the mobo was dead, i ordered another one. the video card, memory etc. (everything but the cpu) is in the computer im using now, so the new mobo gets here... I install the cpu, hook up my cables, power on, and poof, smoke. the mosfetts by the northbridge are torched again. (no mods at all this time)

What do you guys think, did i get a bad motherboard, or is it possible that my cpu shorting out something causing the problem??

I think your motherboard killed your CPU and now your CPU is killing motherboards. Have you checked the underside of the CPU for damage (burned out capacitors/resistors and the like)?

This was my thought too although it's also possible he damaged his power supply and RAM which could also have disastrous consequences.

You will most likely need to verify all of your components separately to be sure they are all working properly.

Good luck.

i think we learned a valuable lesson here...friends shouldn't let drunk friends tweak theri PCs....

I am not quite sure the physical characteristics that would allow the cpu to be blowing up the parts. Someone explain how it would do it. I would lean more towards the PSU myself if that hasn't been changed not...If that cpu was that bad it should just plain not work...

That guy is th biggest idiot...

couple of things....

1) if that pop was enough to blow a hole through the table it could hav ekilled someone had it hit them...

2) You dont even see him unplug the PSU from the board before he goes up and touches things...absolute idiot.

I want to see the 3rd video where he vaporizes

Yea, i read somwhere they used a firework or some kind of explosive under the mobo for that.

Stopsign, if you wanna see what happens when a cpu REALLY kills a motherboard, go watch toms hardwares 1st ever vid. Its pretty good.
