I keep on going and they can never keep up (maxima power), but since they got my plate they just mail me a ticket for speeding plus evasion of police. I've had like 8 in the last year for the same thing.
I smell BS.

If this were true wouldn't they be adding "driving under a suspended license" to the charges?
Skoorb'ed!! :D

Exhibition of speed they call it.
And when they try to write you a ticket for it say:
"Believe me officer, if I was exhibiting my speed you WOULDN'T have caught me."
They always love that one. ;)

What was your argument?

Normally, I've never had a cop bother me with this. I like how jimmyjam got one, lol.

I'd just tell the judge... I have a 2.0L 4 cylinder engine... exhibition of speed? My engine's so puny!! (quick... hide the turbo!)

I'm sure a few of the car nuts here on ATOT would agree with that "if I was REALLY exhibiting speed" comment. A typical police interceptor can't keep up with a Maxima (go Skoorb!) let alone something even marginally faster.

Besides, I've RIPPED the car out of a stoplight before right in front of a cop. Right to the speed limit... they were tailgating me and I didn't want him riding my @$$. My cornhole was aching because he was riding it so hard.

That's the one I always use, normally I just say "listen judge OBVIOUSLY if I had known the cop was there I wouldn't have done it, he was just hiding, so who are ya gonna believe, him or me? At least I come right out about things!"

I've heard of someone doing that, the cop wrote the guy a ticket for failing to turn after signaling.

hmmm..

They already have a mph radar gun for speeding. Going by same logic, to tag someone for accelerating too fast, he should have a radar m/s^2 meter.

Or eyes. Or ears. You can easilly tell when someone accelerates much faster than everyone around him/her and dust flies and the tires scream.

so what's the acceleration limit? surely this isn't something that's wholly subjective...

Just like many of the driving rules, there isn't an exact limit. It is just like when there is ice and snow on the ground there is no exact speed limit - it is up to the cop to judge if he/she thinks you are exceeding a safe speed (and later up to the judge). For acceleration if the cop thinks you are driving unsafe he/she will pull you over. There need not be a set acceleration limit.

The officer's testimony before the judge was weak. All he said was that my car was loud and that he thought (but couldn't prove) that I was going fast. I explained to the judge that I had a "modified exhaust and intake" (a legal catback and CAI) which may have given the officer a misconception of my actual speed. The judge knocked down the $495 (IIRC) Speed Racing ticket to a $50 excessive noise violation (which isn't a moving violation). I paid on the spot with a smile.
Needless to say, the officer was pissed. For 6 months afterwards, I got tailed by a cop everywhere I went in outer SW (the incident occurred near Capitol and Barbur).
