Hi i wanna test out a cpu, and was wondering if it should work without a CPU Heatsink and a Hardrive?
-I am trying to test out a cpu that had bent pins, which i tried to fix.
-I wanna see if it works with out having to put too many components in, so that i don't have to go through the trouble if it doesn't.
Thanks.

ps. BTW i have 74gd raptor, and i need to get a stuck screw out from the bottom, i tried to get it out with a strong magnet my dad had, anyone have anyother tips of how i can get it out. Becasue i tried with the magnet but no matter ho much i rubed it against the raptor, it couldn't extract the screw. Thanks in advance.

what if i just turn it on for a few seconds, that shouldn't fry the cpu that quickly, right? What about the hdd do i have to have that pluged in as well.

never ever turn on a CPU without a HSF. Unless you want to be 100% sure your CPU is dead.

You don't need the harddrive attached though.

Depends on the CPU but you can reach emergency shutdown temperature in under a second on some processors. You're asking for advice, now heed it: don't fool around with running your CPU without a heatsink/fan in place.

really, a few minutes ago i turned it on for like a second. I didn't smell anything hopefully nothing has happened. But is there a way i can test out the cpu w/o having to buy a heatsink.
edit: it didn't turn on.

LOL!! The CPU will fry in about (calculating).... 0.5 seconds. You can start a computer without a hard drive, of course it won't do much without an OS :p

You will need a heatsink eventually. Buy, install, then test. You're probably making a newbie error, and we can help you with that once you got a heatsink.

Be sure to update your rig to:

charred remains of Athlon 64 3500+ | MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum | 2x1 Gig PC2700 DDR | eVGA 6800GT | SB Audigy 2zs Platinum | Dell Axim X50v

. . . unless it's someone else's CPU that you just toasted.

Well you will know when you when put on a HSF and a HD, try to use your comp and it won't even boot.

PREDICTION: Your next post subject will be: "I think I just fried my CPU! HELP!"

Send me the rest of your components if you have fried it. You obviously can't be trusted with money and I'll put them to better use.

When I was first assembling my PC, I accidentally turned the comp on without an HSF. I just had the mobo in the box attached to the PSU. I was so excited to get the thing going that I didn't notice the lack of HSF until I actually hit the power button. The computer was on for about two seconds without it and I panicked when I realized what I'd done. Anyway, the CPU was fine and had no damage. It's since passed Prime 18 hours at 2700 Mhz (300x9) 1.55 vcore. :)

Ever felt a 30W soldering iron? It's hot enough to ignite paper and give you some good burns. CPUs can use more than 50W, usually more nowadays. A lot of it gets turned into heat.
Bear in mind too that a soldering iron has a lot of surface area and it still gets really hot - the CPU die is maybe a square centimeter, probably less. It is able to incinerate itself in a second or less without a heatsink. Do NOT give the computer power until the heatsink is on.....funny, I have the feeling that's been said here already.

Someone needs to link to the THG videos of them turning on CPU's without heatsinks.
And burning up.
Within a few seconds.

If you did not see anything on the screen, it may be that the CPU is a Prescott core and the motherboard needs a BIOS update before it will run it. More spec info please?

Since the Pentium4 has a copper heatspreader attached to the CPU core, there's enough mass there that you probably didn't fry it in 1-2 seconds, but play it safe from now on, k? :)

Don't bother everyone has seen that vid. Do you guys think i should get a heatsink and then try again or i shouldn't even bother.
PS: I thought Pentium 4 turns itself off if it gets too hot.

Post the specs, including CPU core and exact brand+model of motherboard, and let's see what Dr. Frankenstein is workin' on here :D

You saw the videos and you still thought it would be a good idea?

LOL! Is it a Prescott or Northwood? Someone over at Hard|Forum has a sig, something about Prescotts being used to keep the fires of Hell burning, or something similar. They're supposed to be somewhat more tolerant of high temps, so you may not have automatically killed it. But don't try it again. Even if the P4 can take it for a few secs, your motherboard might not and could start smoking.
