So let's say I get a 24" LCD with native a native res of 1920 x 1200.

If I display an image at 1680 x 1050 while keeping 1:1 pixels, how many inches is the actual screen? That is, after you take out the black bars on top and bottom, how large is the screen in?

1680x1050 would be about 20.1".

Make sure you get a monitor with hardware 1:1 pixel mapping, it's an invaluable feature. I always laugh to myself when people complain about nvidia's broken flat panel scaling knowing I'll never have to worry about it.

Another good thing about it is it will work across multiple inputs (at least it does on my Gateway 24"). So I can hook up my Xbox 360 via VGA cable and play in true 1920x1080 resolution without having the picture stretched vertically.

yes the dell does the same, i can change pixel mapping for, vga, dvi, svideo, composite, and component.

I have to say i love these monitors that have all these inputs and features. When i ever upgrade computer monitor it will become a very nice bedroom digital TV :)
