campus parking tickets and collection agencies

i got a ticket for parking on campus a couple weeks ago... which was pretty stupid because the ticket was issued at like 8pm and the parking lot is free after 9pm. I did not pay or respond to the ticket and then they sent a letter to my house saying i owed them $40 and they had the option of increasing the fine, putting me on a tow on site list, AND/OR sending my case to a collection agency.

The first two punishments dont faze me since i rarely park on campus (charge $8.00 to park near campus, $2.50 to park in this huge parking lot about 1/2 mile uphill from main campus).

Its the third punishment that worries me... how often do parking tickets get sent to collection agencies? I heard that collection agencies can mess up your credit rating, is that true?

DAMN THE CAMPUS POLICE! DAMN THEM TO HELL!!!!!! AIEEEE

So, you parked in area during a time which is not designated as free.

Pay the ticket.

Why is it so stupid? The sign says free after 9. You got the ticket at 8. They were right, you were wrong. Deal with it. Pay the stupid ticket and be done with it.

If it goes to a collection agency, the first thing they will do is report you to the major credit agencies. You owe the money, so pay it.

ummm ok... well i know it was before parking hours. Obviously some ppl have not been commuting to school and do not know the ridiculous policies they have.

Regardless, I KNOW it was wrong, i deserved the ticket for breaking A STUPID RULE. My question was if it would get referred to a collection agencyt or not?

If they said it would...then it most likely will.

Going to risk a hit to your credit over $40? 😕

Doubt the university would go to the trouble. Though if you get a letter from a collection company, that might be a good time to go pay it.

Edit: A cute thing that I hear goes on on my campus. If you do pay the ticket (or not), try and keep the actual ticket itself. Then, when you park out of the "free parking" hours, stick it on your windshield. Since they're campus cops (aka, rentacops in most cases) there's a good chance of them just passing it by. I haven't recieved a ticket on campus, so I can't comment from personal experience how well it may work.

Definitely won't work around here.

i got a parking ticket on campus once. i was moving in, and housing adminstration is supposed to supply people with 20 min temporary parking permits, but i didn't get one. i got a ticket and appealed. those bastard replied saying that they'll take off the 35 bucks but still charge me 6 bucks for the 1 day parking price. which was bs sice i only parked for 15 mins in my spot.. .

Word to that. The whole parking situation is skewed in the favor of the school, who can make up confusing policies and small parking lots to force students to commit violations.

i have so much in parking tickets it's not even funny from school
I WILL NEVER PAY THEM! EVER!

Good thing you don't go to school at FSU. Unpaid parking tickets = no diploma, no transcripts.

Isn't that how it is basically everywhere? It's like that where I go.

I got a ticket at UC Santa Cruz for "Parking in an area not designated as a parking area" or some bullsh!t. There weren't any no parking signs, apparently they operate the opposite of everywhere else.

Actually, a days ago prior i got 2 tickets in a similar fashion. One at like 8, the other at like 8.45. Apparently they are allowed to re-issue a ticket every 15 minutes to keep people from pulling that ticket trick (keep a ticket on your windshield and pretend that they already gave you one).

I recieved 3 tickets last year which i promptly paid for. I am sick of this... the only reason they charge so much for parking is to reduce overcrowding. When i got those 3 tickets, it was just after peak parking times (around 4pm), so i feel that i was taking a parking spot from a legitimate person and that i should probably pay for them. I did not like it one bit... because why the hell do they admit so many people that they cant handle the load? I pay my goddamn tuition, and i dont appreciate having to pay extra every year to pay parking tickets. Put that on the tuition bill if the revenue is required to handle the parking load...

Regarding transcripts, i go to University of Washington, and i am pretty sure the UWPD and the school are seperate entities. If you have parking fines, it does not reflect in your tuition balance, which is where transcripts and whatnot go. Not sure if this means that diplomas will be withheld or whatnot...

I guess i will just pay up, because like many people said (and thanks for the advice and not flaming!) my credit rating is not worth $40. Although knowing the parking patrols around here, it will end up to ALOT more than $40 by the time i graduate...

Thanks to all who responded, im glad there are other people who feel my pain.

Around here if you dont pay off everything you owe by a certain date into the semester(late fees, books, lab fees, parking tickets) you get dropped from all your classes.
