Here's a short video of the start of the Camp Fire in California. The winds were insane, and explains how it advanced so quickly on the town of Paradise.

There are currently 77 confirmed deaths, with hundreds still missing. They'll be sifting through ashes for months recovering human remains. A lot of them were elderly who couldn't (or wouldn't) get out.

I've heard two different numbers thrown around for how fast the fire was spreading. I don't believe either one.
100 yards every 3 seconds and 100 yards every second.

IIRC, they were saying it was burning a football field every X seconds. Area, not distance.

It might have been PG&E, that would be a lot of killing.

I think that's probably the case. PG&E had reported an outage shortly before the fire began. They were also warning residents the evening before that they were going to be implementing an intentional power outage due to the high winds and fire danger.

On Nov. 6, PG&E again began warning 70,000 customers — including those in the town of Paradise — that it might flip the switch in the face of fire danger.

But for reasons that remain unclear, the utility decided not to shut off power that day.

Jesus, that's nuts, guy rode home on his quad as fast as he could and the fire had already arrived. Gonna be tough to pin down the exact cause, with those conditions even a lit cigarette tossed out a car window will cause this disaster. When FL was ablaze back in '98 they eventually found some were intentionally set by A-holes.

Are utilities still going to continue making the argument that burying lines is just too expensive?
