I think you'll be post processing all the 828 images as well. Like I said, if this camera dies, I WILL get the 717 or 828 for sure. Pretty much for the same reason as you. I shoot 75% of my images from waist level.
I shoot most everything from bellybutton, too. :D
My guess is that you're right on the money about the 828.
If you get time, look at the 828 at dpreview. The untouched pics show a lot more color through haze than my 717 does.
I'd like to just have the 828 for a day to shoot the same subject matter and compare the untouched images. That'd be awesome. :)

You mentioned what the bike looked like the day you were there.
I wasn't there, but that retouched pic is what that scoot looks like in my mind's eye.
I like the blacker blacks, redder reds and bluer blues.
Maybe it isn't real, but it's really real to my brain.

My buddy just got a Nikon DLSR and I saw some of his shots to date.
They look just like my 717 shots and he has 3 grand in it already.
I'm teaching him how to photoshop and he's teaching me how to take pictures at high speed.
He's a track photographer and his film shots are absolutely awesome, especially his night-time pics.
I don't shoot race cars, but I do shoot a lot of sports and the shutter lag makes a big diff when you're trying to catch a ball coming off a bat. ;)
1/2 the lag would make a big difference to me, I imagine it's less if telephoto isn't involved.
I also take all my shots after half-depressing (didn't think there was any other way).
Even at that, baseball is hard to capture. Speed is tough to grab with that camera.

I don't want to come off like I'm unhappy with the camera, because it's the farthest thing from it.
I absolutely love that thing. It's showing it's wear though and I'm sure it's days are numbered. I'm going to need new and it scares me to death. :)

You're more into the "Art" than I am. I don't have the knack, I'm just a snap shooter. That's why this camera is more than I'll ever need... for still photos. I got my eye on some Panasonic camcorders for video, which is my first love. Wish I had some spare bucks!

Good luck in your quest.

I'd be able to use my backpack full of accessories with the 828, including the raft of memory sticks, chrgers, extra batteries, damn near everything.
I haven't checked if I can still use my filters though.

the F707, F717 and F828 all use 58mm lenses/filters...

Thanks spacejamz, I thought that but haven't taken the time to confirm it.
