why do you call shens? postability is much more impostant to many people then absolute pic quality, and thats the exact reason that the small pocketable P&S digitals sell better then anything else

if i could i would carry around my 4x5 camera all the time to get the best quality pics i can, however with tripod and camera its like 20lbs and its huge, so i dont take it many places

the panny deleivers better pic quality then any of the other prosumer P&S cams, if i didnt allready have a DSLR id prob get one myself

It is a 5MP camera, it allows a very limited number of manual settings and ISO is 80-400 (pretty limited). The only thing I like about it are the specs on the lens but I'd have to see pictures to actually believe it. Still, my 300D allows much more flexibility and I can change between the two L series Canon lenses I already own. I carried my camera around with the 17-40mm lens all day on Saturday at the San Diego Zoo. I should have brought my 70-200mm lens or a macro lens though. I was really too far away to get many good shots of most of the animals.

Carrying it around wasn't a problem at all though.

No, but in this case the more expensive camera will give you greater flexibility and allow for more creativity in your photography. In that sense it will allow you to take better pictures.

Get something like the sigma 18-125 or 18-200, and possibly a fast prime to use indoors, and you don't have to worry about changing lenses often on a DSLR, either. But then, this is going to set you back a little further than a superzoom P&S 😛

Anubis knows where I'm coming from...

The FZ20 just works better for me. Plenty of manual settings and and great lens. Now when we go to the zoo or anywhere else, I'm not fumbling around with lenses and settings. Instead, I am enjoying it my family.

I'm sure I will move back into a SLR, but right now it doesn't work for me.

yea because i went through a similar thing as you, but the other way around, i kept buying prosumer P&Ss that i felt were too limiting, so i finially bit the bullet and got a DSLR, im now on my second one

Same here, though I never owned a superzoom P&S, so the comparison isn't really valid. My latest point and shoot is a Canon A80, which only has a 3x or 4x zoom, if I recall. The XT is my first DSLR, and I'm loving it. With the kit lens and an inexpensive 70-300 zoom lens, I've got everything from 18mm-300mm (16.7x) covered. I'll probably invest in some better glass down the road, but right now this works great.

Same here, I bought one P&S digital and all it did was make me want a DSLR.

I think the Canon 20D will be my next DSLR though.

i dont use it much, i use it prinirly on my film camera, i want a 17-35, as id use it much more, seeing as it smaller lighter and wider

the 24-70 range is a strange one, its eaisily covered by anything with just taking a few steps in and out, and i can cover it with primes

Same here. I bought the 17-40mm F/4.0L Canon lens.

That 24-70 is a big heavy sucker. I used it primarily on my film camera and it takes very nice pictures. I used it a few times at the Long Beach Grand Prix down in the pits and shot some really nice pictures with it. I'm not crazy about the size of the thing and it binds a bit at the top end of the zoom. The autofocus isn't as fast or as quiet as the Canon either.

I think my next lens will be the 100mm f/2.8 macro lens and then maybe the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L. Primes might be a better choice than the latter though.

if your gonna get a macro get either the Sigma 150 f/2.8 or 180 f/3.5, they are amazing, if you dont want the length get the tamron Di 90 as its better then both the nikon and canon 100 2.8s

I have decided to get the Digital Rebel XT

But I have to wait for the money since I went on a sort of "spending spree" ... 1GB RAM stick, GT4 for PS2, MDP-130

But yeah ... I'm going to get the XT

I'd like to get a DSLR myself someday, but that's opening up a whole new money pit, and I don't have that money right now (nor will I for the forseeable future). 😛 Well, that and my S1 IS mostly works great for my purposes right now anyway. 😎
