Camera LCD repair...

My friend broke the LCD on his Canon S500 and wants to know the ballpark on a repair for this thing - whether 3rd party or not. As expected, Canon wants an obscene amount of money for repair, and I was wondering whether you guys knew of any other company that handled such repairs or know what the general figure would be to replace one - thanks.

Bump for a little help here. I had the LCD go on my Sony DSC-F717, and I'm wondering the same thing. I didn't even realize how bad the Sony warranty sucks when I bought this. It lasts 1 year, and it gives you the wonderful "opportunity" to get your camera repaired for a flat $140-ish fee no matter what the repair. If that doesn't suck enough, the warranty doesn't cover "Display devices", meaning that the LCD isn't covered at all! Sony, or one of their authorized repair shops, want $50 just to look at it, and if you choose not to get it repaired, they keep the money. I could really use some info on the cost of replacing the LCD as well. I'd gladly pay someone to do it, but I just don't want to pay $50 to have someone tell me that the LCD replacement will cost more than a new camera... I guess I was naive enough to think that warranties are actually supposed to cover the cost of repairs, period... This is the last time I buy something like this w/o an extended warranty from a brick and mortar store...(spits at Sony)

You can order the part yourself from Sony, as well as a repair manual if you like. You can at least save the labor. I did this a long time ago for an Mavica. LCD replacement is fairly simple, it's usually just a ribbon cable.

You can also try on auction sites looking for parts from other cameras that 'need repair'.

Hello! My LCD screen on my Canon S500 is broken as well. After doing much research on the internet, I have decided to try and replace the LCD myself. I called Canon Parts department at 732-521-7230 and they do carry the replacement LCD screen. It is around $25.00 plus $5.00 for shipping and tax. When I called service initially regarding having the LCD replaced, they couldn't tell me an approx price on the cost to replace it, after looking on the internet, it appears it will be over $200.00, which I just can't afford.
The parts department told me that there is 2 different LCD's and that I need to remove the broken LCD and see if it has the Sony Logo on it or not. I am going to do that tonight and call tomorrow to order the replacement. I hope this works. I have been searching for a repair or service manual for the camera but can't find one.
