Camera in the rain

4 of my kid have football practice tonight and I was intending to bring my Nikon D5200 and use my 70-200MM to take some fun photos. However, it is forecast to rain this afternoon/evening. I have never used my camera in the rain before... Is it safe? Will it break the camera? Even more importantly, will it hurt the lens?

No, it is not safe.

If you get rain into your camera or lens, it is likely that it will be ruined. I don't know which lens you have, but you can research if it sealed at all. The D5200 does not have much protection against water, as far as I know.

That said, I have not had problems with light rain and a Nikon D70s yet, but I try to protect the camera from too much rain. I have also successfully used a plastic bag before.

It actually rained about 5 drops, so I was able to take photos anyway. 🙂

Thank you for the advice all, I may need to purchase some photo raingear.
