Camera Guru's: help needed

So i lent my camera (Nikon D1 [non-h/x]) to my cousin who supposedly is a pro while his was in the shop. Said he cleaned it for me, but now the damn thing won't autofocus. I've tried it with both my lenses and neither will focus, it goes to both extremes then stops @ infinity. Any suggestions on where to check or what to do?

are you fcuseing on something that is too close or far away?
is there ample light?

I havent expirenced this with any of my Nikon SLRs, try asking on dpreview

Doesn't matter if the subject is 2" or 200' away, won't focus on anything. Sux because I wear glasses and I can't tell when my diopter is neutral without the autofocus... so even when something looks like it's focus using the manual dial, it usually comes out blurry because of my fscked eyes 🙁

Can you find the AF sensor inside the mirror box and see if he got some lint or something on it?

I can see in there, but I don't know what the AF sensor would look like. Got a diagram?

I'm affraid not. I'm not even sure where it's at on a Nikon camera. On Canon cameras I think it's up behind the focusing screen somewhere, and it would be exceeding hard (but possible for a determined noob) to gum it up. I've never really looked for it on mine since that's not something you bother with until something goes wrong 😛

Hm. Well, to be honest I wouldn't be afraid to open it. I've been thinking about getting a d200 to replace this anyhow (since it's old and won't sell for anything decent). Guess I'll dive into it when I get home.

I'm trying to find a diagram or photo of the mirror box to see if it's even possible to get at the AF sensor. It could be something else. I'm not familiar at all with Nikons.

On my Rebels (film) then tend to be under the mirror. I noticed on the Elan tho there's at least one sensor on the side of the thing (not sure what to call the area where the mirror lives).

lock up the nmirror and blow out the camera with an air gun or whatever, that should knock anything off teh sensor that might be there

Check out this thread on DPreview. Be sure to clean the contacts on your lenses and camera too.

Not what I wanted to hear 🙁

Yeah, it sucks 🙁 Maybe it's just time for a new camera.

That's what I'm thinking.

Whatever it is, it needs to be an F-mount so I can use all my lenses with it.

/me heads to BH to look at the options.

if your not gonna shell out for the D2X or D1H/D1X i suggerst the D70, this little thing is pretty amazing

Here's another weirdness, I can aim at my subject and press/hold the autofocus. The motors will spin and the lens will attempt to focus but go back and forth, stopping on the furthest focus setting (not in focus though), but if I jiggle the camera slightly it focuses on the subject perfectly 😕
