so getting the 18-135mm is an extra +$300??? that's a bit excessive...

Yeah I'd suggest sticking with the 18-55mm and spend the saved $300 on the 55-250mm IS.

To the OP, so the requirements your looking for are:

Zoom lens
No shutter lag

Do they not make any P&S that have no shutter lag?

What he said. Most people will be indoors and be like, "I need zoom."

Mount the 75-300mm and zoom to 300mm. Then when they see the results.....well...the rest is history.

Yes. Agreed. Don't waste your time with the 75-300mm. Although, are you planning on having ONLY the 55-250...and nothing else? On a crop sensor like the XS, you're gonna find yourself really wanting something wide.

Maybe in time, I will consider that. The big thing right now is to get a big step up and over a point and shoot. The 55-250mm might be overkill, but I am going to probably get it.

A co-wroker did mention a fixed 55mm lens as a must as a 2nd or 3rd lense. For my purposes though, I think the 55-250mm lense serves more utility than a fixed 55m lense right now.

Before I forget, I am appreciating all the back and forth (aka: help) that everyone is providing. I've learned alot in 2-3 days.

I think he was asking if you were going to get the 55-250mm and NOT the 18-55mm lens. That would be a poor decision IMO. The best thing is the full kit with both. Then add the 50mm f/1.8 later. Again, it's less than $100 and it lets in 4 times the amount of light that the 18-55mm kit lens does.

Suggestions:

Consider the Nikon D3100 for $640 (e.g. Newegg in cart), or Canon T1i for $700 for video capability -- although somewhat limited, having video capability with you is a cool plus for a bit more. Even if you don't see yourself shooting movies or especially watching them, videos capture more information, and videos of kids' changes over time will have value as time passes.

To make it more affordable, you could get the zoom and 50 f/1.8 prime for portraits and an add-on tilt/swivel flash down to road for Christmas or whatever. The kit 18-55 would be just fine for a party and most immediate needs.

Oh, the 50mm lens is under $100? Well, that changes things a bit. Maybe for x-mas .... To clarify, this?

I am getting the body/18-55 kit and 55-250 lense. So, yes both.

Assuming I get the 50 mm lense, what bag should I get. Inexpensive being the operative term.

Nice choice. I was just looking at the Express series myself but was leaning towards the 6. The 5 is to small it seems. But the 7? Isn't that just going to be to big? I want to minimize extra bulkiness and I think the 6 would fit the camera w/ lens attached and 2 extra lenses.

The Express 5 dimensions (internal):
6 W x 3½ D x 6⅛ H

The Express 6 dimensions (internal):
7¾ W x 3¾ D x 8 H

The Express 7 dimensions (internal):
11 W x 4¼ D x 9 H

Also, memory. A co-worker said I should be conscious of better performing memory. What is the fastest memory card that I can get for the Canon Rebel XS? Do I need the fastest memory card? Any recomendation would be appreciated. Looking at 8 gig. Probably going to buy 2 of the cards.

I have Tamrac 5 for a K100D with two lens. Just no place for the flash. 6 is better but 7 definitely gives you more space for other accessories.

Sandisk Extreme or extreme III are very decent.

From looking and reading a bit. I think the class 10 cards are not needed. I would likea class 6 which the Sandisk Extreme III is. But it is $44 at newegg. Very expensive compared to the other brands.

I can not find out anything about hte built in memory buffer for hte Rebel XS. How big is it? If it can buffer say 10 photos or more (32 meg buffer or greater I think), I don't need fancy memory cards.

EDIT: From article: "unlimited buffer for JPEG shooting". Really? How is that possible? The review later says that they took 30 pictures in 10 second with no problems:

EDIT 2: I think I am going to go with a class 4 to start:

I'm stupid. I'm going to get the 4 GB extreme III (or was it jsut hte extreme?) for about $30. That will still give me like 1000 JPG large images.

I'll just get one card to start.

I have the Canon XS and just use a basic Kingston 8GB card. This camera isn't fast (3fps JPEG, 1.5 fps RAW), so there is no need to spend money and a really fast card for it.

Why is your link a redirect?

Large JPEG files are 3 meg. 3 fps = 9 meg/s

I don't see how anything under a class 10 card would work but apparently they do. I still will go with the class 6 4 gig SanDisk for about $30. Based on performance, I'll get the same card later or upgrade.

Did you buy the body yet?

Newegg has a promo code for 15% off all DSLR's!

Code: EMCZZYS22

That's $74.85 off the Kit.

Just for today? Bodies only? Or is it for Bodys with lenses?

B&H has a package for the Rebel XS w/18-55mm and 55-250mm for $650. Seeing that the 55-250mm lense typcially goes for $210-$220, that is basically giving me the Rebel XS w/18-55mm for $430-$440 (effectively 12%-14% off of $500).

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc..._XS_a_k_a.html

But if newegg has 15% off, that would be the less expensive route if I bought the 55-250mm seperate by about $5-$15, but with shipping, etc might make it a wash.

I'm probably going with the B&H package deal.

That's with the kit. $78.85 off the $499.00. Total in the cart after $4.99 UPS shipping comes to. $429.14
