Camera battery storage question

I'm going to be putting up my old Coolpix 995 and the D40. This MIGHT be long term storage. What is the best way to store these li-ion camera batteries? I think they should be fully charged and stored outside the camera.

My understanding is that about 50% charged and stored in a cool environment is best. If you want to store them for a very long time, discharging and recharging at some interval (6mo?) will help keep them fresh.

For Li-Ion batteries, Panasonic's recommendation is this: "The batteries should be stored at room temperature, charged to about 30 to 50% of capacity. We recommend that the batteries be charged about once per year to prevent overdischarge."
