I've finally narrowed my camera choices down to a reasonable number, so please look over the list and give me advice, other suggestions and share your experience with a novice.

Just so you know, I'm upgrading from a Canon A95...

I need:
-reasonably wide angles... at least wider than the 38mm (eq.) of the A95
-fairly good color reproduction - i'll be using it for portfolio shots of my set designs
-decent low light (theatre light) performance
-to spend less than 400, the closer to 300 the better

I'd like:
Good zoom capability
Twisty screen
Zoom ring

My list thus far:
Canon A610
Canon A620
Nikon 5400
Nikon 8400 (if i can find a used one for fairly cheap)
Samsung L55W
Casio EX-P505
Casio EX-P600
Casio EX-P700
Canon Pro1 (again, used and cheap)
Fujifilm S5200
Konica A200 (used and cheap)

So, people, what do we think?

I should add the S2 IS to the long list, but i doubt it'll make the short list... i'm hoping to get something with ~7 MP so I can make some really nice, large, impressive portfolio prints.. Gotta do anything I can to win them over at URTA in a year :)

I work in an electronics dept. so I get to mess around with some cameras. From your list, the best quality for the price cameras, that meet all your criteria are the Canon A6's and the Nikon 5400. They both have a good set of features and produce nice pictues.

The s80s don't have a powerful enough zoom for me, and I hate the power on/off mechanism.

Because it has a wide angle lense, its wider than the ones you listed.

true, but the zoom is pretty weak, and it doesn't have any lenses for telephoto, does it?

Ok guys... i've narrowed it down: Konica A200 (8 MP, 7x, 28mm-200mm, antishake) or Canon Pro1 (8 MP, 7x, 28mm-200mm)... what do you all think? Also, anyone know of decent places to get these? Buydig has a good price on the Konica, but I don't have experience with them... do any of you all?

Well, we have resolution! I decided on and just finished purchasing the Nikon D50 dSLR. I figure it'll be good to get into a system, and I quite liked my sister's D70, plus we can share lenses now (she was very glad I went with the 18-55 lens... she doesn't have any wide angle lenses)... It won't be here for a while, i ordered the cheapest shipping and its the holidays, but eventually i'll let you all know how i like it.

amazing how i started with a $300 budget and wound up with a $700 camera.

Geez... I'm a consumer-whore, aren't I?
