Are you getting your well worn head replaced? How about the transport that screwed up in the first place? How much life is left in the CCD? Is the focus mechanism going to last another 5 years or puke tomorrow? Corrosion on any of the many contacts in that unit can render it useless all over again. As you can see, it wouldn't take much convincing to get me to crack the wallet for such a new toy.

i recently (about 4 months ago) purchased the GS250, http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Panasonic-PV-GS250-Camcorder-Review.htm, in my opinion, the best value in miniDV's today. it's not as nice as the gs400 but it costs about $300 less.
and the stills you can shoot with this thing are pretty good. it seems to shoot stills as well as my Sony DSC 80 (that one is starting to show it's age but was a good camera when i bought it 4 yrs ago).
low light shooting is a problem.

Good God, It's available for $500 all over the place with $50.00 rebate available. NewEgg fanbois are annoying.
Speaking of annoying, YOU'RE the one posting and asking for advice. YOU'RE the one who said in the OP, "I'm willing to pay more for a better perfomring device." YOU'RE the one who said $1,800.00 had been paid for your existing unit.

Panasonic PV-GS250 VS DCR-HC90Mixed bag of Features
- For less than a hundred more than the DCR-HC90 users can procure the penultimate in manual control of Panasonic?s consumer 3 CCD camcorders, the PV-GS250. While the DCR-HC90 and PV-GS250 are close in video performance, the DCR-HC90 really wins in low light. However, when it comes to options, audio features, and manual control, the PV-GS250 clearly wins.
- 3 CCDs do not compensate for the GS250's limitations. After a week, I returned it an bought a Sony HC90. IMHO it surpasses the Panasonic in every category except bright sunlight conditions.
How many MPs for stills on the Sony?

Yeah I was leary of it too... Online buddy of mine who does a lot of video for his job orders a lot from them and had no problems with them... for $60+ less I'll take the gamble. Hell any warrany work is through manufacturer direct and I bought with AMEX so I'm not worried.
