I read this thread that got locked about how gm was going to stop producing the camaro and firebird after 02 (which i knew about a year or more ago). Well further down in the thread everyone started crapping on the f-body. I drive a 2000 v6 camaro and i really like it...it has its advantages and disadvantages. I would have to say that most people that buy an f-body take care of it on average better than most other cars (except substantially more expensive cars). I didn't realize that so many people have negative opinions of f-body drivers. Im not going to start a flame war, but post what kind of car you drive if you wish and lets have a discussion. I think people buy our type of american sports car for an image. Im young and not a very knowledgeable car buyer, but I don't see me ever not owning an f-body or american sports car. I pay to drive my car, especially as a result of my age (18). But to me it is worth it. My only regret is that I opted for a v6 instead of a v8. I don't think I do the bodystyle and the heritage justice. Thanks for reading and post your comments.

There aren't white trash cars at all. They cost a fair amount of money to get a good one. Especially the Firebird, I can't see why they are dumping it. It makes sense to dump one of them though.

I wouldn't quite call them white trash cars, but the perception of them isn't far from that. Personally, you couldn't pay me to drive a Camaro or a Firebird.

I just read a thread in the hot/deals section that was of course locked and the majority of the people that posted really seem to dislike the camaro and firebird. My camaro was 20,400 out the door with many options (t-tops, cd system, sport appearance, axle up, etc.) I think that price is pretty decent for a brand new car in its class...but I do admit the suspension isnt up to par with a lot of imports. My sister's elclipse gsx (nice, fast little awd car) handles alot better than my car stock. Of course it has awd, but the suspension is much better also.

It's the old Camaros and Birds that look like hell with body filler and primer all over them that help perpetuate the stereotype.

I say drive what you like, and know why you like it. I've known a few perfectly cool people drive F-bodies. They say it's about bang for the buck, and dusting yuppies who don't even know how (or are too scared;)) to drive their BMWs. Though I have other preferences, I sure can respect the choice you made.

I drive a 94 Z71 Blazer, but f-body cars are cool with me. I dont like 90s camaros though, they made them ugly. Now the OLD SCHOOL f body cars, OH BABY, HARDON TIME!

I loved the late 60's, 67 I think, camaro and firebird. After that they seemed to go down hill for me.

I think the streotype came about because the manufacturers built them with some very reasonably priced models. They were then thought of as a cheap sports car. You could buy one for half the price of the high-end model and they looked the same. Sort of the way some people think of the mustang, especially the mustangII, if anyone remembers those.

Then some people did things that people pick on ricer's for doing.

I don't especially care for F-bodies, but then I generally dislike GM cars. The first-gen Camaros and Firebirds were gorgeous, but it has all gone downhill from there IMO. I don't think Camaros are TOO bad, but the current Firebirds, especially the high-end ones, are just laughably overdone and hideous. That white-and-blue anniversary edition Firebird they released a year or two ago can easily stand toe-to-toe with the Aztek for the title of Ugliest Car Ever Built (and they are both Pontiacs - hmmmmmm)

I think the problem (to the extent there is one) with F-bodies is that, while most F-body drivers are perfectly nice, normal folks, there are also a certain number of jerks that drive them who ruin it for everybody else (these are the guys who wore Oakleys and Zubaz in the late 1980s).

This is true for all kinds of cars, e.g. "Rice cars". There are certain perceptions that go with certain cars. Buy what you like, if you are secure with your self confidence, who gives a sh!t what other people thinks?

<- drives a 2002 Acura RSX Type S

I had a Mustang GT before (way back when I was 15) did not like it too much.

my problem with the fbodies are too many are on the road, you can not drive down the street and not see one. I do not want a car that is that common.

Acura makes only a limited number of their cars a year, and do not haggle or step down on their prices too much so they always have high resell value.

just my .02

The F-Body/White Trash thing is just a stereotype. It's a pretty common joke in Jersey about greasy Italian types driving Camaros, TransAms, Firebirds, Mustangs, all those so-called "Pony Cars." Note the popular joke song "I'm a Jersey Girl" has the line "My boyfriend Guido drives a Camaro." (which, I'm sure you've probably never heard, being in Texas)

It's just an image thing....like all stereotypes, it doesn't apply to everyone. I know most of the Camaro drivers I know all fit the bill--they have this "I'm a tough guy" mentality and they treasure their car over all else, which, I believe, explains your perception that f-body owners take more care of their cars than others. My Camaro-driving friends manage to keep their cars spotless, even if their house is falling apart. They are also all Italian. Then again, I'm from an Italian family, living in a part of Jersey that has a huge Italian population, so it's going to be a given that the Camaro drivers I know are going to be Italians. That they drive like jerks is coincidence--they would drive like jerks in any kind of car.

Early Camaros are really great-looking cars that had the traditional "muscle-car" appearance of the time. The later-model ones don't have the same classic appearance, IMHO. I would have bought my ex-gf's dad's '67 in a heartbeat, but I wouldn't be caught dead in a Camaro made after about 1978.

Finally, the Camaro drivers I know all drive as though the "muscle-car" appearance and history of their car actually makes them stronger and tougher. Consequently, of all my friends, they are the ones who most frequently drive recklessly, obnoxiously, and complain about getting tickets for going 100 in a 45.

But like I said--it's a stereotype. I'm from Jersey where the stereotype seems to have originated in part, so I've seen where it comes from. You might just like the history and the way it looks, and actually take care of your car. Doesn't make you white trash or a jerk. Likewise, many Camaro drivers in this area are the same way.

IMHO, the WS6 T/A is the premier GM car, even moreso than the Corvette. For much less, you basically get the same car, albiet it's styling isn't for everyone. If anything GM should be discontinuing the Vette, but we all know that will NEVER happen. ;)

I think the Firebirds are fugly and if a white trash person was going to drive a sports car it would most likely be one of these 2.

however.. I myself would not mind AT ALL having a new Camaro SS.. Not a Firebid though, the Camaro is better.

just think about this.. would you ever see a white trash driving anything other than an American car ?? pickup or firebird or something along those lines.. that's about all... they are the only 2 decent sports cars from America (V8's that is) except the Mustang (which sucks IMO) and they are the Camaro and Firebird... if you aren't white trash, and choose to drive one of these 2 cars, prepare to put up with flames from ppl... heheh

Let's not get carried away! The Corvette is an American icon, and (more importantly to GM) it sells, unlike the F-body. I would never drive a WS6 without a fake nose and beard (and preferably a full-face mask).

yep...camaro mullets. and why are you driving a $20,000 car at 20yrs old? Don't you have better things to spend money on?

Camaros and Trans Ams were cool at first. In the 60's or something. 80's were total crap. and now I don't know but I imagine they still handle like pontoon boats.

For example try racing one against some decent cars in Gran Turismo

Ahh, the Zubas. You know, some fat people still wear them. And Oakleys. I knew a total jerk in HS who bought them to be cool. He even put the sticker in the back window of his '79 Grand Prix. Those were the bad old days.

Anyway, I just read the thread in HD. Oops! Not such a hot deal.

BTW, I currently drive a 1.5L, 102 H.P. '92 Civic LX. Last night, it was $11.90 to completely fill the tank @ $1.539/gal. I have no ricer mods, and the exhaust is quiet. I'm pushing 43 MPG on the interstate. I like it fine, but I'd prefer an Acura RSX because I like hatchbacks, and I'd like to have more features and more power. The thing is, I don't really want to pay a lot for a car, so I typically buy cars that are around 10 years old, have over 100,000 miles, and are in decent condition.

my bro just picked up a ws6. It is very fast, and gets 28mpg on the highway. 75 mph is 1500 rpm's on that 6spd pays off.. It handle's like mad (275's all around huh). Other than the cheap plastic interior, seems like a great bargain, since most 1-2 year old models depreciate so much..

also theres a ton of cheap bolt-on's that increase the performance significantly.

And that's the reason why GM will keep selling it. :) Because the middle aged balding guys, who are too good for an F-body, would never "stoop" to the level of the Camaro/Firebird. :) For performance though, a T/A is in the same league, easy. And for much less. But people would rather drive "Corvettes" than "Camaros", hence the popularity of the Vette still, even though it's nothing to get excited about.
