Heh, someone forgot to counteract all that added power. It's pretty easy to build a small block to near or over 1000hp, not nearly as easy to do right by the chassis and supporting drivetrain components.

I don't think that's a mechanical "failure" at all. I think that's the result of drinking too much while you're working on your car.

That's possible, but you must remember, those 80's Camaros shipped from the factory with almost invariably ~200hp or less. Then some genius tools up the motor, maybe does an LS swap, puts big slicks on it, and then expects the thing to stand up to 3 or 4 times the stock power output.

All things considered, it could have been much worse.

Yeah good thing it came apart at the line, and not during the 2-3 shift!

I had a friend who owned an '89 IROC convertible. Whenever he would drive over a speed bump at an angle the door glass would separate from the roof by about an inch or more. The chassis in that car was about as stiff as a wet lasagna noodle.

That was the big complaint about the 3rd gen. They needed significant stiffening for much power addition or you could twist them pretty good.

4th gen was better but still when you crank the power way up you need to stiffen the chassis.
