Camaro and Firebird die while the Mustang lives on...why is that?

The F-Body isn't a pony car at this point. Its way to long.

This isn't to say that it doesn't perform, but its a HUGE car.

That and the fact that the Mustang outsold the Camaro and Firebird combined... it put a damper on GMs producing them.

For die-hard Ford fans, the Mustang is the pinnacle of Ford's sports car lineup. Chevy has the Corvette, so they can fall back on that as brand identity/recognition, without the need for the F-body.

The real reason that the mustang is still gonig strong and the camaro/firebird are dieing, is because the mustang sells 3 times as much as the other 2 combined. Why does it sell so much better? I dont know, maybe cause it's got more comfortable seats, maybe cause it's more of a legend than the camaro (EVERYONE remembers the Ford Mustang, lots of people dont even know that the firebird is made by Pontiac)

That, and Mustangs are just cooler (but I'm biased :p).

But why did Ford have to make the Mustang all pointy and edgy...like the Focus? Ick.

The new T-Bird is smooth (a bit cheezy, though, imho) at least.

Ford should make higher-end sports car. Something that would be a level above the Mustang and maybe a little more luxury tossed in. A Ford version of a Jag XK8 maybe.

Yeah, I know that it outsells the F-bodies combined 2:1, but I was wondering more of the reasoning behind...at least in the buying publics' eyes.

Look at it this way, its alot easier for a 17 year old girl to navigate a 6cylinder mustang rather than a 6cylinder camaro :p

Mustangs are more affordable than either the Camaro or Firebird. Also if you look at Consumer Reports the Mustang is more reliable.

I think the Mustang tends to have a better following because it reaches more ages? Maybe I'm just flapping my butt cheeks here, but I know many more 35 year old men who want a Mustang then a Camaro/Firebird.

Also I dont know why but here in quebec most people would not like to be asociated with driving a camaro/firebird or a corvette. I dont know how to describe it in english but driving one of these is like being a loser, kind of like how GM fans hate Ford fans, there is no true argument agains it but it's still that way.

The Mustang outsells the F-bodies due to Ford's superior Marketing. The Mustang appeals to a much broader segment of the car buying public. Look at the stats, the 6 cylinder Musang outsells the V8 version by a wide margin. The Mustang is still popular today for the same reason it was a smash in 1965, it has something to offer everyone. A lot of Mustangs are bought by women who want a nice sporty car but don't want the V8. The F-bodies are ugly and incredibly uncomfortable to most. They sit too low and you basically sit on the floor in these cars so the avarage adult does not like these vehicles because they are really hard to get in and out of. They have the performance, but that is all. The problem is that the F-bodies appeal to the maket segment that not only cannot afford the vehicle, they cannot afford the insurance (mostly males 17-25). Chevy thought they were in a performance war and Ford beat them with brains.

Huge car? Have you ever seen the ones from the 60's?

I have absolutely no numbers to back this, but I would venture to say that a large percentage of the success of the Mustang rides on the sales to women and teenage girls.

This is a very significant demographic and is hard to pin down. For some reason the VW and Mustang designers have nailed this market. I have heard SOOOOO many women say that they want a mustang.

I have heard very, very few women desiring a Firebird or Camaro.

Something about the name and the looks of the mustangs just get them wimmens all hot and bothered.

Like someone said, the high end versions of the Camaro and Firebird are alittle too pricey while the smaller mustang is less expensive, IMHO.

I find it pretty normal for a v8 fully equpped camaro to be more expensive than a v6 mustang with no options....

Camaro/Firebird:

Pros: Performance (Camaro SS/Z28), more aggressive styling (Firebird Firehawk anyone?)
Cons: Prepare to be raped on insurance, way too big for their target market, huge ticket magnet

Mustang:

Pros: Decent looks, decent performance (GT), cheaper insurance than a Camaro, compact package (ie no 5 foot overhang on front & back), massive after-market support
Cons: Slower than a Camaro/Firebird
