I've always enjoyed Garfield myself. I don't have anything against Calvin and Hobbs, but I've never really been into it. I actually found the Far Side to be funnier when I was younger.

You probably did not enjoy the Far Side either.

My personal favorites:
Far Side
C&H
Bloom County
Sherman's Lagoon

Never read Sherman's Lagoon but if hey're anything like the other three I'll be needing a lot of time to catch up.

"Yo dawg, we heard you like shades. So we put shades on yo shades, so you can look cool while you look cool."

Anyway, C&H is one of the best comic strips. I was so bummed when the series ended, but it did go out on a high note. I still have all my paperback collections and the hardcover complete collection. The neat thing is Bill Watterson lives somewhere here in Cleveland. Might bump into him one day. He used to autograph C&H books for a Chagrin Falls bookstore and put them on the shelves. Nice little surprise if you found one. Unfortunately eBay tards had to ruin it for everyone. :(

Garfield became anti-funny ~the time I turned 8. C&H is genius.

The fact that you enjoy Garfield pretty much tells the story right there.

While I also believe C&H is infinitely better than Garfield,

Garfield minus Garfield is pretty funny.

too late :p

but yes; this is the only time I've found Garfield funny. It's great...too bad it's unintentional.

Nice job w/ the socialism you guys are running here in the US. Democratic and free market on the cover, but socialism on the inside. That's like the exact opposite of what China's doing!

Garfield is the most un-funny comic ever created.

/edit: Well, maybe Family Circus...

Least Funny Sunday Comics of All Time

1. Family Circus
2. Marmaduke
3. Garfield

I will admit, I liked Garfield when I was 11. I also liked Growing Pains. Those are the 2 things that make me wish I had a time machine. I'd go back in time, punch my 11 year old self in the stomach, drop a few Black Sabbath albums on him and step back into the time machine.

The stupid decals of Calvin pissing or praying annoy me a lot. Watterson went into much detail on his views on licensing in the 10th anniversary book, and all those products are counterfeit and repugnant.

Don't forget Blondie, and that one has been around since at least the 1940s!

Calvin and Hobbes isn't that funny for kids. It's funny for adults.

C&H was funny for smart kids.

I was around thirteen when I started reading it and loved it.
I think that's when I stopped reading Garfield :p

Haha same.
I'm not so brilliant in class grades now in college, mostly because I don't put any effort into school anymore, but in elementary and junior high I was basically ahead of the curve in anything I cared about, which the number of things I care about have dwindled in recent years.

But yep, used to get Garfield collections all the time to read through, then stumbled on Calvin and Hobbes and found it hilarious. I still find it hilarious to this day, and while I'll enjoy the occasional Garfield strip in the newspaper, reading anything C&H blows it out of the water. It's definitely geared towards the 'adult' crowd, but is easy to understand for the young folks who pay more attention to the world around them then most their age.

I still want to recreate Calvin's snowmen one of these days. Those snowmen strips were hilarious. :D

same story as me.

i used to read garfield until about 4th grade. there were a few garfield cartoons that i remember just cracked me up.

then after about 4th grade i started getting, enjoying the Far Side / C&H cartoons more and more.

Yeah those snowmen series were awesome. I remember one where he'd built a snow man in front of the car with the head resting on the hood of the car (like it had been hit w/ the car) with a couple other snowmen starring in shock, the dad says something like 'we need to get that kid some help'

awesome.

That's exactly that same kind of thing I've always wanted to do, but never knew it.
I at times was kind of demented as a kid, and my parents always pointed that out. Whenever I had to write poetry for an english class, I could only be really creative when it was kind of gloomy and dealt with death or something similar. In my creative writing course, my poetry sucked because I tried to move away from that style (and I hate poetry to begin with), but my stories, one that one a writing contest at school, still had moments of that same demented creativity.

I really wish I could go back to my childhood days and make those kind of snowmen. My parents would have gotten a kick out of it, but also probably would have went that extra step and actually have gotten me 'help'.

Hell, maybe next winter break, if there is enough snow I'll do that. :D
Hopefully any kids I have, that at least one shares that same twisted creativity. And me and him/her can surprise the (future) wife with something twisted like that.

You're in Commiefornia. You're part of the problem. What kind of gig are you running here huh? HUH?!

Damn neo-hippie liberals are the ones interested in social programs the most, and I fear what'll become of our country with a democrat-controlled government and all the new social program ideas they have in mind.

Fuck I hate all this shit. Let any company going bankrupt just go bankrupt. If it's a big company, sure it might hurt the country for a bit, but we'll reap the benefits by getting new, better companies. Don't save companies, all that does is push the hurt into the future and will basically just prolong our economic crises for a lot longer than it needs to be. Everyone is so afraid of a little hurt for a short time, that we'll do so many things that unknowingly puts us into a situation of a LOT of hurt for a LONG time. Kind of ironic how it'll work eh?

Garfield is awful. Here, let me recap every Garfield ever:

Garfield: I hate Mondays.
Jon: I can't get a date.
Garfield: Ha ha! I just kicked the dog!

/end. See? It's the same thing every day, and never once funny. Calvin and Hobbes, on the other hand, is brilliantly drawn, sparklingly written, timeless, prescient, hilarious, and emotionally full.
