is there a difference between the 2?

i currently do seated because it's less strain on my back (if the weight is loaded on my shoulders from smith or squat rack) or arms/hands as well as back (if i'm grabbing the weights off the floor).

should i be mixing it up? is there a benefit to doing both?

also, pointing your feet in different angles, does that help?

Do both. Seated will work more the soleus head while standing will work more the medial and lateral heads of the calf.

As KoolDrew said...do both if you can.

You will get superior calf development doing both.

Can you get someone to sit on your lower back and do Donkey calf raises ??
You are bent over but your legs are still straight.

I think different angles means different parts of the calf muscles worked. Toes point out = inner calves worked, toes point in, outer calves.

I seem to be slowly going toward the idea that exercise should mimic real movement and thus standing calves seem a better exercise than seated.

Anyway, in regards to stress on back with standing, just do one leg at a time. Easy solution!

BTW, if you run the only thing that ever put on calf size for me was forefoot running. It loads the hell out of them and WILL put on a little bit of size if you have stubborn ones.
