Calorie neutral food..does it exist?

I heard you could eat celery all day, and its pretty much calorie neutral, possibly calorie deficit. I love to eat, and at this point in my life I pretty much have a conditioned response that I cannot be happy with eating unless I am full. Thats when the endorphins are released. So I am wondering if there is something I can eat that can make me full and make me happy. Oh and I prefer something that has some taste to it, unlike celery.

Just eat less. To achieve that, eat more slowly. Have a lot of water with your food, then you'll be full.

Yeah, I know that works in theory, maybe I will give it another go, but its A LOT easier said than done, and I know its not supposed to be easy, it would just be nice if it were easier

No, there are no calorie nutral foods. Even celery is not even close to calorie neutral.

(There are some foods that actually have no calories, but I don't think that's what you were asking)

I would highly recommend readin "Why Calories Count". Brilliant and well researched book.

Believe me, I can sympathize, I have the same issues with food. Are you trying to lose weight? What are your goals?

I found the act of chewing curbed most of my eating issues.. so I've been chewing gum whenever I get the urge to eat something. If after I finish the piece I still think I am hungry, I will eat something. Working so far.

You don't need any physical activity to lose weight, you just need to eat less calories than you are burning.

If you feel like you can do that without counting calories, go for it. I cannot. I use an app on my iphone to track everything I eat, and I lose 2 lbs. per week.

Sugar free fruit cocktails.
A whole can is 140 calories.

Most green veggies are low calorie. A whole cucumber is like 5 calories.

And don't laugh. A full Sub at Subway can be under 700 calories if you research it first. First, their italian bread is the lowest calorie bread. The turkey and black forest ham sandwhcih is the lowest calorie meat based sub. Avoid Tomato. The cheese adds 100 calories but I get it anyways ... for better taste. Load up on all theveggies you want. The only toppings you can have are the shakers (salt, pepper, etc) and vinigar. No oil, no mayo, none of that. And you can get all this for under 700 caloeis. It's an entire footlong! And if you must get chips, get baked lays. A side of diet soda or water.

At wrk, if it is a desk job. Start drinking tea to keep you full. I can leave for home on 300 calories at dinner time many days. From there it is a small dinner of whatever my wife makes and a light snack.

If you want to be serious about eating to feel full, do some research. And then do some more. Because diet is a highly personalized thing. What works for some will not work for others. But as Blackjack200 has already stated, the key to losing weight is calories in < calories out. And that is it.

I have lost 50 pounds by counting calories. I have a lot more to go and have started adding some cardio in for heart health. But it is still only calories.

The things I have learned for myself:

i track my calories. i have an app for my phone and i log everything. try it and you might be amazed at how much you are actually eating. once you really start keeping track of what you eat, you can see what choices you make that are calorie wasters.

drinking anything other than water is a complete waste of calories. no soda. no juice. calorie free drinks like tea and coffee are okay if you like them without sugar or creamer. ( i don't, so it's just water for me)

I need fat in my diet. it helps me to feel fuller longer. and if you are eating a moderate amount of the right kind, they are not 'evil'. i eat cheese. and butter. and other foods with fat. and i love them. :)

i eat more greens and veggies. veggies and salads are great ways to eat a lot and not get a lot of calories. i dont like a lot of veggies. but i like a few, and so those few i eat by the crapload. they are a great source of fiber, which also makes you feel full.

i eat more FRESH fruit. i love fruit. i think fruit gets a bad rep when people talk about diets, but as in everything, moderation. fresh fruit is about a bajillion times better than canned fruit or fruit sauces though so i stay away from that.

i eat more lean proteins. i love red meat and would eat it every day, but i personally feel chicken, turkey and fish are better choices, so i eat those more now. proteins are great for making me feel full without a huge calorie impact. i also eat more eggs. which i love.


i find that now that i am really choosing foods that i not only like, but are calorie smarter, i eat a LOT and still don't have a lot of calories. leaving me with room for treats even!

for example, the other day i ate only 1300 calories. im not trying to eat that little. but i had a cup of yogurt for breakfast with some blueberries and honey wheat germ mixed in. a chicken caesar salad for lunch. for dinner i had half a bag of steamed broccoli, pasta with alfredo sauce and TWO rolls. and then two freeze pops later that night. 1300 calories. and if i ate anymore, i would have felt stuffed. now granted, it wasn't the best as far as eating enough protein for the day, but i was under my carb goal, under my fat goal. and i never felt hungry all day.

a few years ago i would have had fast food for 2 of those three meals, and a bunch of wasted calories in soda and juice that totaled about 3000 calories and probably still felt hungry.

you need to really understand that it is a change of mind. it has to be, or it won't work. and that it takes time and effort. or it wont work. i didnt get to this point overnight, or even after a few months. some people like to eat early. some people like to eat late. some people just dont like fruit. whatever works for you personally, as long as you try to be smart about where you get your calories.

weight loss = calories in < calories out.

I guess I am just confused as to what a calorie neutral food would be? How is something calorie neutral? Does it take as many calories to eat as it contains? Maybe I am just dumb today. =(

Celery is said to have 0 calories and it obviously takes more than 0 calories to digest it.

And this is a myth. Celery has calories. 19 cals per cup of it diced up. I love wikpieida. Your body uses about 1.5-2 calories to digest that much celeray.

And sorry for miss-spellings. No auto correct on this machine!

Some soft drinks are erroneously advertised as having "negative calories". The only truly negative calorie beverage is ice water, which has no calories but requires the body to expend some energy to raise the liquid to body temperature.

I found that eating more protein and fiber gives me the full feeling while ultimately eating less.

Just try eating less, your body will compensate for it over time and you will need to eat less to get the full feeling.

Yeah, this is probably a good way to start. Also, if you must eat til you feel full, make sure you're eating lots of the right types of foods rather than the carb/fat/sugar loaded stuff, which is almost all snacks you can buy. Things like chips are notorious...you can eat tons of them before feeling full, but they have a LOT of calories. Same with bakery type goods. If you eat protein- and fiber- rich foods, you'll generally eat far fewer calories before you feel full.

Yes, there are calorie neutral foods and celery is one. You do actually acquire calories from celery, but the energy you expend by digesting it is equal to or greater than the calories acquire. However, there are very, very few of them. I remember researching this topic a bit and celery was the only one consistently.

Also you don't really release endorphins when you're full. There are satiety centers in the brain, hunger hormones (ghrelin, leptin, etc), and dopamine that may increase with more of an addictive association with food.

As everyone else has alluded to, you need to get a handle on your drive to constantly eat as opposed to enable yourself to eat all the time by carefully picking your foods. Why do you feel you have to constantly eat? Why aren't you actually getting full when you eat? What kind of foods are you eating? Selecting the types of foods you eat has a big effect on satiety - more fiber, more healthy fats (in moderation), and more protein tends to be the way to go. If you have trouble with overeating, then start a serious calorie tracker.
