Top of the morning to you all...

My father is currently in Canada and on his way to your City, NY.
What I was asking is if anyone would be so kind as to give me a few pointers.

My father will be staying at:
Wellington Hotel
871 7th Ave At 55th St.

Can anyone say if there is any Good Computer store in the proximity of the hotel?
I was hoping my father could bring me a couple of things but I can't afford not to give him specifics as He will have a very tight schedule....

If there is anyone out there capable of some assistance I would be most appreciated..

Cheers

Not sure about good but there is a Comp USA on Broadway and 57, which is only a short walk (Three blocks).

Is proximity of the hotel within walking distance? Because yeah, Comp USA is there, but there is also a Best Buy a quick subway ride away.

Well...
for starters, thank you both for your replies.
Well, a short subway ride away might be a good compromise also.
When I say good, I mean pricing a variety wise...

There's also J&R a half-hour (at most) away on the Subway. It's right by the Brooklyn Bridge, and is a tourist destination itself. Prices aren't great, but it's a useful store. OTOH, if your dad is in a hurry, he may not make it down there.

Does anyone know of a zipzoomfly (former googlegear), ajump or other big American computer store in The Area, whatever that is... Or are they all in California? :p

In NY I would stick to Comp USA and/or Best Buy. It's gonna be hard to beat Best Buy's prices in NYC.

For Best Buy: Hop on the N or R (Yellow line) to 23rd street. It's around there somewhere.

Why not just buy from Best Buy online? Is the exchange rate that bad that it's worth buying computer stuff in NY and then bringing it back to Canada? Am I missing something?

EDIT: You should state in your OP that you're in Portugal! :)

LOL!!!
And who said anything about bringing it to Canada? I'm from Portugal....

:)

And the diferences in price are remarkable... For the price ou buy a A64 3400+ there I have to settle for a 3000+

The problem with best buy is that I can't seem to find what I'm after... Do they sell CPU's and memory independently from entire systems? It surely does not seem so from my point of view here...

If there's anything else you'll like to share, please do...

Hi there..

Can Anyone tell me if, in general, the prices are lower in California or in New York?

Well, if you are looking for a few random parts such as CPU's and motherboards and you are looking for the best possible deal, your best bet is probably going to be a small shop in Chinatown. There you can pay cash to obtain a "cash discount" and get very competitive prices. I'm only familiar with a couple of shops in Brooklyn Chinatown. Perhaps someone can suggest some in Manhattan?

The thing is... I'm trying to take advantage of the fact my father is going to be therefor the next... 2 or 3 days....

I'm really interested in a cpu, A64 3400+ primarly. Memory, corsair or ocz. A 512 MB stick of PC4000 or something in that region.... And possibly a couple of W.D. 200GB S-ATA Drives...

Chinatow? Are we talking known makers or asian not known board makers?

I know a couple of stores with great prices, Ajump and zipzoomfly, but they are both in California.

CompUSA is your best bet - Best Buy is hardly good for comprehensive hardware. They have some mid-range peripherals and components, but nothing past CD-writers and the like.

I've heard good things about datavis.

Their website says they are located at: "Datavision's flagship SuperStore is located in Midtown Manhattan, at 445 Fifth avenue @ 39th street adjacent to the New York Public Library."

Yeah, Datavision isn't too bad, they have parts in the basement. The salespeople are very pushy though and I don't know if they'll have the lastest processors, etc. I think everybody just buys that stuff on the internet here.

EDIT:

Chinatown is an area of Manhattan (generally along Canal Street and bordered by West Broadway and the Manhattan Bridge). If price is your objective, the best deals are to be had here. These stores generally have a much smaller selection but should have the items you are interested in with the possible exception of high quality ram.

Otherwise, stick to the big well-known outlets like Comp USA and Best Buy where you will pay retail or close to it.

Chinatown may have the cheaper prices but you have to know what you're looking for when you go. You'll only get about a 15 day warranty from them and then you'll have to deal directly with the manufacturer after that. Make sure that you don't get jerked with the parts because most stores sell OEM parts.

I don't think anyone mentioned Circuit City so that could be a possibility.

Directions to Circuit City:
Take the 4 or 5 express trains, 6 local train, or N/R local trains to 14th Street Union Square.

Directions to Best Buy:
Take the F to 23rd Street.

Directions to CompUSA:
Take the F to 57th Street (I think).

Absolutely, but It seems as if pmsfv is after the lowest prices. As with anything, you need to be extra careful when you are in search of the lowest prices. I wouldn't recommend that he go exploring downtown but he should have the choice.

Besides, OEM parts are still under warranty from the manufacturer. I'm assuming he's bringing it back to Portugal so any warranty may be very well be void anyhow.

First and foremost I'd like to thank you all for your insight on the matter...

For me the biggest problem is the fact that my father is the one who's over there, not me. If that were so I would explore a try to find what I'm looking for. But he doesn't know the diference between a grafics card and a hard drive... Well it isn't this bad, but close.

As I've said before, I want to make it as easy for him as possible, so not to give him any escuses for not bringing me what I want.

As I want specific hardware such as AMD Opteron 3400+, Corsair Pc4000Pro and WD 200GB SATA; I reckon chinatown isn't the best place.

There are two big outlets I know such as Ajump and Googlegear. So basicly I refer to there websites for Prices...

Would you think the price of $415 for the athlon 3400+ to be easy to find in NY?

This opportunity for make great deals is getting narrower by the day....

Tank you all

I'd like to thank you all that try to help me.
Unfortunately the only thing I found athat might be brought by my father is a couple of hard drives. But even that not at the price I have fom another big outlet...

If only there were someone willing to receive an order in his/her house and then forward it to my home address here in Portugal... There is only one little problem... I don't know any of you... Every masterplan has its little problem....

Thank you all

Cheers
