some info:
Vista business 32-bit
7.6 w/ Ati tray Tools @ XTX speeds, 44c idle, 60 load (according to ATT in game OSD)
1680x1050 resolution

i sometimes drop to 40-50fps in most CS:S maps such as Dust2, Assault (usually with 10+ players in server). i've tried lowering a lot of my settings and i still drop in FPS.

in ATT i set everything to "performance" or "Application Controlled".
in the game, i have everything set to the *'ed items. (if u guys need to know what they are i can open up the game and type it up here)

what can i do to maintain a relatively high FPS (75+) so i dont drop FPS if suddenly a lot of action jumps onto my screen.

let me know if i need to answer anything else in order for u guys to help

try setting shader detail low in cs source  Also I had a low fps problem because the main "news page/front page" was open. Try closing it after you join server (flash animation may suck cpu power perhaps).

i don't why you get low frame rate ;( i use to play CS:S on a 9600pro and it worked fine. no lag issue , no hardware lag and i did win alot of rounds but that was years ago. Now i am anti-cs person who plays Day of defeat not source but i do like playing the source version sometimes.

I no longer have my X1900XT, but when I did I played CS:S no problem, maxed out 6x AAA/16xHQAF.

When I had my 1900XT paired with an X2 3800+ I would play at 1920x1200 mostly high settings, shadows and lighting turned to low, and model detail to medium and get 60FPS on average, with dips to the 40s at certain times.

When I upgraded my processor to an E6600 and paired it with the same video card I was able to crank everything to the max, including HDR and the whole works all at 1920x1200 and get 70FPS constantly (Vsync turned on).

I was amazed at how much of a difference the CPU upgrade made. :)

Cheers,
KT

Don't be too dissapointed, I sometimes dip to 40FPS too with everything on the highest, 4xAA,8XAF on my 8800. CS:S seems to be a pretty CPU dependent game, so either overclock your 4800+ or go for a C2D. A 4800+ at 2.6 or 2.8Ghz should be just fine.

isn't oveclocking from 2.4ghz to 2.8ghz only a 2% increase? didn't think it was necessary, can someone experienced with the a8r32-mvp board help me OC to 2.8? currently, my CPU idles at 36C and loads at 48C when no AC in summer and 85F room temp

before my GTS640 i had a X1900XT256. in CCC i left everything pretty much default accept i checked HQ AF and AAA but i left them application preference. in CS:S, 4xMSAA 8xAF, everything else was maxed but Water Detail was on Reflect All and no Vsync. in maps like dust2 and office i get what your getting more or less and these were deathmatch servers with 20+ people. don't really remember the exact range of FPS but i didn't notice any slowdowns. all this @ 1920x1200, too.

um read your statement u know its cpu dependent and you have a weak cpu and your frames drip sometimes. its the cpu.
im not saying its weak its a nice cpu but a faster one would help.

what? are you implying that people with weaker CPU's than the 4800 X2 has drops in frame rates???

I actually have a very similar "problem" with lower frame rates in CS:S. I have a X1900GT, with the AMD 64 3700+, and I too have times where i get down into the low 30s.

The weird thing is that on the "Video Stress Test," I get the same average score, 90 fps or so, as my friend (who is running an overclocked E4300 and 7600GT), yet in game, he gets about 30 avg frames per second higher. Why is that?

Not sure. I usually play CS:S at 1280x960 6xAA/16xAF everything maxed and maintain 75+fps on most maps, except the new militia and nuke, where I'll be sitting around 50-60fps. Using the 7.5 cats on an X1900AIW stock speeds with an Opty 144 @ 2.3Ghz and 1GB mem.

i see, thats a much lower resolution...

and guys, please state what OS you're using? is it Vista maybe???

is what AA/AF/Quality settings should i have it at to get a smooth 60+FPS @ 1680x1050 in Vista 32-bit?

I just started playing CS:S again.

This is the first time I've played with 1920x1200 resolution.

with everything maxed out in the options, 4x/16x AA/AF @ 1920x1200, I get around 50fps average with it dropping into the low teens when there are tons of people, smoke, flashbangs, etc.

If I keep everything the same except use 0xAA/16xAF I get around 60fps average and I drop into the mid twenties.

Opteron 170 @ 2.5GHZ (lowered from 2.8ghz because of some heat issues)
2GB OCZ Gamer Extreme PC4000
X1900XTX 512mb @ 690/800
Vista premium

EDIT: CAT 7.5's

well.. it was a dip in FPS, but i think i solved it now, just played a 1 hr run of smooth CS:S. it was the 3d setting in ATT. set it to max speed and everything was flawless. then changed it to auto-balance and everything was still fine. checked net_graph 3. and i saw some dips in fps to about 70 from 100 but it wasn't noticeable in normal play.

so Louisssssssssssssssss, you basically think that it was just a setting thing? I am just running the CCC not ATI tools or anything, so maybe I can play around in there and see, but I am pretty sure that I already have everything on performance.

So you would say that you saw a pretty substantial improvement though??

And by the way, I am still using XP pro

For you spitz10, it might just be the cpu. In terms of max fps in games, I didn't notice much. But going from my a64 3500 to my e4300 gave me a huge bump in minimum fps. My card is an x1900xt btw. Even then at 1680x1050 w/ 4xaa 16af there's still some drops to like 40fps during heavy fire fights, smokes, and flashes. However, when I oc my cpu from 1.8ghz to 3.0ghz....wow, all the drops dissappeared. It was pretty much at a constant 60fps for me.
