Calling Nforce2 temperature experts!

I have an nForce2 mobo w/ IGP (Shuttle MN31N) but the fan is starting to growl on the northbridge.

If I disable the onboard video, will I need the fan? (As in, will the NB run cooler without video?)
Should I replace the HS/F with just a big HS?

I can't help you with the onboard vs. no onboard thing; I've never used an NF2 mobo w/IGP before.

But I can tell you that many folks have replaced their NB active cooling solution with a big old passive HS. Zalman makes a nice one...I believe it's bluish in color.

Also, I believe their have been threads about this in Cases & Cooling...Insane3D I know has done the swap. He made a big old thread w/pics a few months ago.

HTH.

MichaelD is indeed correct, Zalman make a large blue passive 'sink for Northbridge cooling. Apparently it has the same cooling effectiveness as a regular HSF Northbridge combo.

Well if that's the case I can have silent + still use the onboard video which is passable - if not decent.

A little on the fuzzy side.

Hope said heatsink can be nabbed CHEAP! 🙂

Me neither.

Mine's gold but it works wonderfully. I have been able to run at 220MHz FSB successfully so I don't believe a fan is necessary, but good cooling definitely is. The NB and the SB chips both get quite warm on my board.

I'm still running an Epox 8RDA+. V1.0. :Q One of the first things I noticed was that the stock NB HS got really warm, especially while running a 200FSB.

So I removed the HS and there was a little tiny pink pad under there. Cleaned everything up real good and slathered on some AS. Now the HS gets hot. What's that tell you? 😉 Good cooling is definitely a must.

FWIW, I've been running it this way for almost two years now. I do have good case cooling though, so that helps.
