i previously mentioned i was taking the AmTrak from PA to NYC to ultimately catch a plane.

anyway, i go to pick up my tickets at the station today and find out that i can only bring two carry-on baggages with me, and each one can be no more than 50lbs. no check on baggage at this particular station, only carry-on. i want to take with me my camera bag (and it's contents), tripod, and suitcase with my clothes.

1) "personal items" are not included as part of the count. would any of the above be considered personal items?

2) also, how do they check to see if any one of those are over 50lbs? i'm afraid that my medium-sized suitcase with clothes might be over 50lbs.

any suggestions? i'm particularily interested in what manlymatt83 has to say since he has lots of AmTrak experience. thanks to all!

I take Amtrak to and from NYC-DC all the time. They hardly check and you can bring as much as you can carry. I see many women bring two huge rollons and their personal bags.

We had to move some stuff from one suitcase to another in Puerto Rico because it was >50 pounds. It may have been close to 60 pounds

He's going to be screwed if someone decides to enforce company policy. It's not worth risking. Ask them ahead of time and be prepared.

Thanks for the input guys. i agree with Nik, i should get it officially approved.

the thing is, how do they expect their customers to know how much their baggage weighs? i don't have a weight scale at home so what do i do... take it to the gym and weigh it?

They don't check Nik. If you can carry it your are golden. I hardly doubt they can weigh anything on a train, at least I've never seen them do it. Source: I ride Amtrak almost every 2 weeks.

i found out that the camera bag doesn't count toward the 2 baggage limit: Thank God!

as for the weight of my suitcase, i'll just pray for the best and try not to pack too much.

thanks guys for all the input!
