Worth it at all over a good 5.1?

Well...mine's 7.1, but I got it b/c it was the Onkyo S780 setup on a hot deal, and the receiver and speakers that came with it were loads better than the 5.1 and 6.1 systems.

6.1 is worth it over 5.1 but unless you aren't paying much more I haven't found that 7.1 is really worth it. Most discs are still encoded in 5.1 sound although more and more are coming out with at least 6.1 support going to be a bit longer before you start seeing a decent amount of discs with support for that many channels.

If you can get nice quality speakers for the 5.1, go with that. You can always add on later to complete your 6.1 or 7.1 setup. As long as your receiver supports it.

I can't imagine noticing much difference from having a rear center channel.

no. if you have it calibrated correctly, you probably will not notice the rear surrounds...

I didn't think I'd hear a difference either but when I added one to my existing 5.1 setup it did make a difference. And yes I had both setups well calibrated.

just curious what is distance between your right-rear and left-rear channels.? also how far back is your rear channel? and how big is your room... most of the time the 6 and 7 channel will help fill ambient sounds if you have a very big room... but if your speakers are say like 5-6 feet away and your rear like 1 foot behind you, it really will be hard to tell...

also, i think only thing that hits rear surrounds are ambient sounds... for dd-ex, but i believe dts-es material is another story...
