I love my MX518. I've used a G5 before, but the only (really) annoying thing I don't like about the G5 is the tilt scroll wheel. I use the scroll wheel to switch weapons sometimes in Q3.
I've also used a Razer Diamondback. But the cord got a short in it and kept losing connection so I had to switch to an MX518, replace the Diamondback. However, I found it was really hard to get used to the Diamondback again after using the MX518. However, with the Diamondback, I could rail in Q3 really well.

I use a G5 v2 (Blue/2 Thumb Buttons).... past mice: Copperhead, mx500, mx518...

To me.. I think the G5 v2 is possibly the best one I have used, though the Copperhead is sick - I couldn't get used to the way the mouse is shaped, as well as the thumb buttons.
On the fly DPI switching, side scrolling "buttons" (bind to game functions = awesome), and the overall quality of Logitech mice seem to win me over.

For your main question -- Yes, a good mouse is worth the money and will last for a very long time, if you take care of it. You may need to replace the feet on it, but.. its kind of like an oil-change on a car.. $5 every 6mo? (give or take) for new mouse feet, not a bad investment for a good mouse. You can spend $60-70 on a mouse, and if you take care of it it will last longer than two $30-40 mice.

ALSO-
-- A good mouse is nothing without a good mousing surface. My favorite being the fUnc 1030 (Rough) or Steelpad Qck+. You can usually pick up a very good surface for $10-20 depending on brand/material.

This coming from me playing FPS.. HL1/Counter strike v1.3, Quake 1-3, UT99, UT2003/4 (semi pro 2k3).

Razer diamondback kicks ass!!! Since I got it, my css skill has increased. Get a good gaming mouse pad too.
