Calling electricians...what is this?

I was replacing a switch in my wall and noticed this odd connector in there. What is it? It looks like one of those connectors on PC power supplies:

Those are beginning to replace wire nuts. They are much easier to use and hold tighter. When you see them, just think of a fancy wire nut.

Yeah. It's an alternative to wire nuts. Those 4 wires are all connected together. The term is "push in wire connector".

I'm not an electrician, but I did wire up my garage for lights recently and I used those connectors. It was easier to push in one wire at a time than wrangle up 3 or 4 wires into a wire nut.

Oh yep just a terminal block sorta, except they're all connected. They're nice, but more expensive, so not that common. If you're doing a whole house it adds up.

All that does is tie all the wires, in this case 4 together, just like a wire nut. You strip the wire the correct amount and just push it all the way in. Wires, however, are somewhat difficult to remove from those type of connectors. If you use them, just be sure you get UL Rated and that they are the correct size for the wire gauge.

Honest question, do you not twist your wires together before you install your wirenut? There's no way that push-ins should ever be stronger mechanically or conductively than a proper wirenut connection.
