I'm trying to send a fax from Canada to Australia. I'm using my PC (using Windows Fax on my Windows 2000 box and a faxmodem - US Robotics Courier V Everything).

I'm trying to send a fax to a fax machine in Australia - Sydney to be precise.

Anyways, here's the problem - I enter in the number, with Windows filling in all the dialling rules stuff. Number looks right when it dials.

The modem dials - it's silent for about 2-3 seconds, the you hear the standard fax beeps for handshaking, and then the ringing tone. It rings usually twice or three times, then drops the call - stating that the line is busy. (it's not busy - it's ringing and never gets answered before the fax machien picks up)

I can fax fine anywhere domestically and the US, and have even tried faxing to Hong Kong with no problems.

Is anyone familiar with the AT commands (or do they even apply to a fax) and can extend the number of rings? I've tried ATS7=120 (supposed to wait 120 seconds?) but it doesn't seem to do anything.

Sorry for the long e-mail. Cliffs notes:
*trying to fax and the modem drops call before other fax answers.

See this page for info:

Modem commandshttp://michaelgellis.tripod.com/modem.html

When you use the "S" command, the first number is the Register #
.. the next number sets the number of Rings

Also, since you are not faxing in the US, you may need to select
CCITT instead of Bell 201A modem. You may also need to try
Software Flow Control to On ... and check the number of total
BITS, including how many Start, Stop & Parity and be sure they
match what the FAX modem at the other end expects to see.

hmm...does my AT command syntax look wrong? I haven't really seen any sites that show examples of how it should look like so I'm really just taking a stab in the dark with that. I just entered that in as an additional AT command to do when dialing.

I didn't see an option of changing to CCITT in the modem setup in Windows. I changed the flow control from Hardware to Off but I'm not sure what the Start/Stop bits and parity on the other end is. It's just a regular fax machine on the other end - not a fax modem.

Thanks Bruceb for your help so far.

So the line you are calling isn't picking up before your modem starts doing the handshake?
