CALLING AMIGA EXPERTS!

My mother-in-law has an Amiga 2000 she used for years to type her book. The book is complete but now she can't send the publisher a file because of disk format/compatibility.

She's begun re-typing the whole thing but it'll take her over a year at the pace she's going. And this is a BIG book, thousands of pages in length. (I don't know who'd want to READ it.....) 😉

The question is simple: How can I transfer those Amiga files to the 400MHz Windows PC beside it? Neither PC currently has internet access, but that could be changed.

If I can do this, I'll be the best son-in-law ever. 😛 😉 That's an especially good thing should we successfully buy the house only a block away! :Q

THANKS!!

IIRC, Amiga -> PC was hard. PC -> Amiga was easy.

Its been at least 4 years since I even saw my Amiga 1200. If I remember how to do it, Ill post here or PM you.

Hope AmigaMan pulls through for you. My Amiga is rusty at best.

Is .PDF an acceptable format??? Why not print the thousands of pages off the amiga and have a copy place scan and convert them to .PDF? The other way to go would be to scan each page and try using character recognition software to import each page into Word that way.

I'm no expert, but I'm thinking Amiga->Some Unix flavor->Windows would be easier. It seems like there would be tools for converting from Amiga in Linux/BSD/etc.

I have an old Parallel port scanner that had OCR software that did a decent job (my new Epson scanner does not have OCR software).... but would YOU want to OCR **thousands** of pages? Correcting each one? It's faster than typing, but still PAINFULLY slow!

I don't know much/anything about unix/linux so I don't think that's much of an option for me. 🙁

How about a null modem serial cable and two comm programs? There are/were plenty of freeware comm programs for Amiga though it's been so long since I've turned mine on that I cannot remember any of the names.

Can the Amiga dial up to an ISP? I would say get the Amiga on-line, upload the file somewhere or e-mail it, then retrieve it with the PC ...

BTW - does your Mother in law have backup copies? This sounds like it could possibly be a scenario I once saw when I worked at Gettysburg College wehre someone had the last 5 years of their life (research, papers, books) on a single hard drive ....

She's got a printed hardcopy. A couple chapters on floppy. The rest hanging on for dear life on her aging hard drive. I've got to do this - for her sake!

Yep, XMODEM the file!
Null modem cable, or even use a modem if she has two lines or you or someone else still has an analog modem and can load up HyperTerminal or some freeware/shareware comm program and have her dial them. P2P '80s style 🙂

This may be my best bet! Next time I'm out there I'll definately try that! The only trick is getting an Amiga comm program before then!

Me and some mates used to link our Amigas through parallel ports. One launched a Host program, the other launched a Slave program and they communicated that way.

This internet way sounds better but Id guess a Parallel network could do it.

Does the amiga have a harddrive?

If so make sure that the crossdos driver named "PC0" is located in the "dh0😀evs/dos drivers" folder. If it isn't there it is located in the storage folder. You must then copy it to the "devs/dos drivers" folder.
If you're booting from floppy you will need to move this file to your boot floppy.

1) Boot into workbench from disk.
2) Insert disk labeled "Storage"
3) Double click "Storage" to open disk.
4) Find file named "PC0" (not sure where on disk. if not here try the "Extras" disk)
5) Drag file to disk called "RAM:"
6) Insert "workbench" disk and open by double clicking
7) Open "Devs" folder and then "Dos Drivers" folder
8) Open "RAM:" disk.
9) Drag PC0 into "Dos Drivers" folder.

Provided this all goes well you should be able to reboot (Ctrl-A-A) and now you should be able to read PC formatted disks. See below.

This should allow the amiga to read pc low density floppies (high density floppy with tape across the hole opposite the write protect hole for people without a bunch of old disks 🙂 )

Anywho... Insert amiga disk with file. Copy this file to "RAM:" disk.

1) At top of screen in workbench, right click and click execute command.
2) in box type "cli"
3)at prompt type "DF0:" and hit enter
4)at prompt type "copy insernamehere RAM:" and hit enter
5) after copy completed remove disk
6) insert PC formatted low density disk
7) type "RAM:" and hit enter
8) type "copy insertnamehere PC0:" and hit enter
9)after copy complete dance a jig
10) tell your mom that you love her and you saved her a year of life.

Hope this helps. If you need more help please go to www.amiga.org My username there is Desverger.

Good luck.

You see that? You see that post up there? AWESOME!! While I do have a peer-to-peer parallel cable and could do a crossover, THIS method looks GREAT!!

Yes, it's an Amiga 2000HD and everything is, indeed, stored on hard drive. If this works, I'll be very happy!!

It'll work. Provided it will fit on a 720K floppy. Just make sure that PC0 driver is in the "devs/Dos Drivers" folder and you'll be set to read and write pc disks. If you need anything more just PM me and I will send you my email address.

sorry to bump this from the deep but I need to keep it active... I'm linking this thread to my brother-in-law who will hopefully be able to do the job for me, seeing as how I'm two provinces away. 😉

Thanks for understanding!

1BlackHatch is correct. If the crossdos files are there that will work and very well. Did it many times but many years ago now.

If you can not find Crossdos on there try the Null Modem thing with a terminal on each machine. JrCom and others were terminals on the Amiga. You can use Hyperterm on the PC. The only thing is you would need a simple Null Modem Cable. I hope for ease of getting this done for her the Crossdos files are there!

Good Luck.

...Dennis

I still have my Amiga 500 and Amiga 3000 but it's been a long time since I last used either.

1BlackHatch's method is far and above the easiest and quickest way to do this- I was going to post the same thing but he got there first 🙂
