Calling all Radeon onwers: How are your drivers? Especially in Win2000Pro?

I had a Radeon and hated it. I had to get rid of it beucase the Win2000 drivers sucked, Rune had no object textures and Diablo2 wouldn't run in D3D mode.

I've been holding out for a single chip Rampage becuase I expected it would be cheap...but looks like no go there now. I don't think there is going to be a value NV20 so that leaves me with a GeForce2 class card which don't impress me terribly...yeah they are "fast" but the image quality really isn't that much better than my Voodoo3 (excepting 32bit colour of course).

The Radeon does all kinds of nice image quality features, and is more than fast enough for me (I had one in my system remember so I know how fast it is). EMBM is really cool in games that support it (which I hope will incresae in number) and 4 matrix skinning and keyframe interpolation both look really cool to.

Also nVidia's 2D is pretty bad...and that's where I spend most of my time....so I'm looking at either a Radeon or an R200 Value....but I dunno..I'm still iffy because of the drivers issue...I plan to go to Whistler about an hour after it hits store shelves (I'm guessing that the time it takes me to grab it off the shelf, get home, and install it will be about an hour) and since Whistler is basically Win2000 I want good Win2000 support which the Radeon didn't have when I had it.

Well it's been nearly 2 months now since I had my Radeon...that's quite a long time in Graphics land it seems, so how are the drivers now?

Hello,

No problems yet. Just got a Radeon 64 DDR VIVO. Haven't done too much with it but it ran Deus Ex and MDK2 well (I got 58 FPS at 1280 X 1024 X 32bpp in MDK). I'm running Windows 98, can't give you an impression of the Windows 2000 drivers.

Mark.

I'd like to know as well. I'm planning to install W2K prof or server with my AIW Radeon on my lanky p2 400. Think I need to get more RAM!

I have a Radeon 32mb DDR and it runs great in on Win2K SP2. I have the latest Win2K drivers and they work great...especially with Rune. I have been playing Rune non-stop lately and it looks beautiful. I have also played MDK2, Alice, UT, Q3, and others all in Win2K on my Radeon. There is a nice tweaker program available that opens up some extra options and it is rumored that an official DX8 driver set for Win2K is forthcoming before the end of the year. Also, it overclocks nice..201/201(402).

sp2...is that beta? Can you point me to the correct direction for that tweaker/overclock program you mentioned?

Win98 drivers are really good. I will soon be setting up Win2k dual boot. The newest Win2k drivers are supposed to be MUCH better than the old ones. XFree86 has just released ver 4.0.2 which has Radeon support for Linux.

Maybe an R200 Value would be a good choice then. I don't think there's to be an NV20 and I don't find a GeForce2MX a big enough step up from my V3....(I went from Software to Voodoo1 to Voodoo3, I'm looking for that kind of jump again ;) heheh ok well maybe not SW to V1..but V1 to V3 jump)

Gotta support the underdog, and my favourite underdog is now roadkill so I guess I support ATi ;) Hehehe no I'm kidding I just don't want to pay GeForce2/Radeon prices, I'd prefer GF2MX prices, but I want DirectX8 features, so unless I'm wrong and there is an NV20"MX", I think it's ATi for me...

Hydrobum you can use Powerstrip to overclock your Radeon. I've had mine at 190/180 comfortably.

As for Win2k drivers, they are functional, just not as fast as I would like. Once they get up to Win9x speed I'll jump over to Win2k just like that. Until then, its Win9x for me. However, I have not taken the time to put a fresh copy of Win2k on my machine with the latest drivers... it just takes so long. From what I've heard the new drivers are a HUGE improvement over the ones that came with the card.

Remember (and I don't know the actual hardware term) that the Radeon accelerates your mouse pointer in Win2k!!! :p well its not a big deal but its a nice kick to throw in.

I went from an Annihilator Pro to a Radeon and I was stunned. The visual quality is something not to be dismissed, its truly a big thing! I hope more people eventually get to see that.

Yes, SP2 is beta, but I have had no problems with it. If you are interested, it is available at 3DChipset.com. The links don't seem to stick around for too long, I guess it is supposed to only be available to Microsoft certified testers. They have posted a couple of new links because the old ones went down, head over there and look for it if you are interested. As far as the tweak program, it is called RadTweak, and it is available here. There is a new one being developed over at Rage3D that I am going to try, I haven't yet though. You can get that one here. I just downloaded it and it seems better designed than the one I am using...I will let you know how it goes.

Right now, Powerstrip is the only program that will o/c the Radeon. The new tweaker I posted for Animefreak will supposedly soon be adding support for overclocking. I personally have better luck with the 2.78 version of Powestrip, rather than the newer 3.0 beta...give them both a try. You can get them both at 3Dchipset.com.
