As former monitor engineer for CRIME, substitute soundman for The Stone (across the street from The Fab Mab), and occasional lighting operator for ROMEO VOID and OiNGO BOINGO , in SF during during the Heydaze of PUNK music..... I was saddened to hear of the passing of Dirk Dirksen , owner and operator of The Fab Mab nightclub.

I received the following from my buddy, Ted......

Calling All Punks...Calling All Punks

Dirk Dirksen: "The Pope Of Punk" leaves behind a Rich Legacy, But Little Cash.

By Ted Oliphant Former Soundman, Mabuhay Gardens.

The Pope Of Punk Has Passed Away, from Baghdad By The Bay, Gardens Of Mabuhay, To The Dark Clubs Of L.A. Dirk Gave Many Their First Breaks, and Many Second Takes. Always With a smile, Dirk Would Go The Extra Mile.

Dirk Dirksen left behind a Rich Legacy, Golden Memories and he was a Jewel, but when he left us he didn't leave behind much cash. Not enough to pay for his SRO Memorial. Not Enough to pay for his Final Resting Place.

Kathy Peck of H.E.A.R. www.hear.net has taken it upon herself to raise the money to pay for Dirk's Memorial and his Final Resting Place in The San Francisco Columbarium where Dirk will be a neighbor of Chet Helms.

On January 2, 2006 Kathy is going to hold an auction to raise money to pay for Dirk's Memorial and Final Resting Place: www.hearnet.com

Kathy needs you to donate any Punk or Mabuhay Gardens memorabilia to Dirksen's Memorial Auction which will be held January 2, 2006

All proceeds will go to Dirksen's Memorial Fund, headed up by Kathy Peck.

To make a donation contact Kathy at 415 409 3277

Kathy Peck, bass player for pioneering S.F. lady-punks the Contractions
and co-founder of HEAR Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to
alerting musicians of the permanent hearing damage that can result from
repeated exposure to concert-decibel music, is organizing an eBay auction
to raise money to help cover the funeral expenses of much-revered San
Francisco punk promoter Dirk Dirksen.
Dirksen, who died a few days before Thanksgiving at age 69, was to this
city's emerging punk-rock scene in the late 1970s what Bill Graham was to
psychedelic rock a decade earlier. In 1976, Dirksen persuaded the owner of
the Mabuhay Gardens, a Filipino restaurant and nightclub on a seedy,
strip-club-lined stretch of Broadway, to let him book punk bands there.
For the next 10 years, the club would serve as the center of the Bay
Area's punk scene and earn Dirksen the title "the Pope of Punk." During
its decadelong run, the "Fab Mab" helped launch the careers of countless
local bands, including the Dead Kennedys and Flipper, and played host to a
who's-who of the national and international punk scenes.
Among the items on the auction block are several dozen pieces of local
punk rock memorabilia. Go to www.hearnet.com/auction.html to check out the
growing list of donated items.
